Clark Sentenced Yesterday to One Year In the State Penitentiary, Which Will Hold Him, When George Clark, one of the most notorious criminals with whom the ioj tul police ever had to deal, was picked up in Little Rock and sent l>ack here to answer a larceny charge a short while ago, the famous "Jack me Shooter” crimes in Little Rock be gan to wane. Previous to that time Little Rock had been patrolled by hundreds of citizens armed for the purpose of put ting a stop io the terrible crimes that had been enacted there under cover of night, Clark was yesterday tried In the cir cuit court here for larceny and tt did not take a jury long to give him ono year. His removal will be carried out soon, lOr (’lark has broke out of the county jail once here and is llke> > to get out of most any jail he liappona to get into. The police regard Clark as a must dangerous character after nightfall He works every conceivable form of crime, it is said, under cover of dark ness. His presence hereabouts at the time of the mysterious murder at the Parker house in this city about three years ago lias caused some of tli-3 police to cling to the theory that none etner than (Mark pulled off that job, not that he intended to murder, but that lie was on a robbery job, wag In fected, and shot and killed In order to get away without being taken. ROOSEVELT CLUB TO CALL MEETING - PRESIDENT STRAUSS SAYS LOCAL ORGANIZATION WILL FOLLOW, ANY ORDERS. Will Hold Ward Meetings and Name Delegates Who Will Attend the Roosevelt National Convention. President Ous Strauss, of the Roosevelt Club of Hot Springs, last night, after being advised of the pro posed movement In behalf of Roose velt, said the Rot Springs Roosevelt Club was prepared to take any action in behalf of the progressives that might be beneficial to completing the new organization. Anticipating that thp progressives as have been formerly named by Roosevelt Insurgents, but who wore not recognized at the Chicago conven tion, it may npt be necessary to hold* any further conventions here, but the Rdosevelt following is enthusiastically awaiting orders. President Strauss Is , back from Chicago, where he attended the con vention one day. He was a guest on (hat occasion, and of course not an accerdited delegate, since hts delega tion had been ruled out in the "steam roller” process of the credentials com mittee. Mr Strauss carries a gold watch about as thick as a silver dol lar, which his friends point to as a victim of the heavy roller. “We heard the grandest address ever made last Monday night," Raid Mr. Strauss. “Mr. Roosevelt had an enthusiastic following, and there !? no doubt in my mind but that he is tht choice of a groat majority ot the Republicans of this country, and 1 have no doubt either but this fact will ice demonstrated when he and Mr. Taft appear before the people as ri val candidates." Mr. Strauss brings back a good joke on Alderman Horner, a well known Democrat of this city, whom he saw in the national Republican convention at Chicago, wearing an alternnfe badge. He accosted Hlorner to konw just who the Democratic alderman was an alternate to. but did not find out. A friendly feeling prevailed in Chicago between the enthusalsts, ard while the contention was hot and there was a lot of talk about rioting' Mr. Strauss states that at no time did it appear that reai trouble wouiu result. Sensational SHOE SALE One Week of Bargains Parker Shoe Co. 612 CENTRAL AVENUE. MARKET NEWS NEW ORLEANS COTTON. New Orleans, June 22.—The price of cotton showed a decline of 26 in 34 points on futures as the result of this week's trading. The market had a steady tone this week through, but. prices hud a sagging tendency, chief ly as the result, of improved crop ac counts. At tiie highest, the trading months were 2 to 4 points over last week's close; at the lowest they were 30 to 35 points under. The range of prices was 32 to 3t» points. Bulls gave tile market good sup ,x»rt at times and much was made of a better inquiry for spots in nearly all spot centers. The hulk of trading resulted from the operations of var ious cliques and crowds of profession als. The best crop reports came from Texas and Oklahoma where heavy rains effectually dissipated the fear that the crop there was about to suf fer from high temperatures and lack of moisture. Other parts of the hell sent in favorable accounts. Shorts were also encouraged by private re ports showing only an fc tgnifleant decrease in area In the spot department prices lost 1-8, middling closing at 12 1-8 against 12 1-4 last week and 15 1-16 this wees last year.
