GUS STRAUSS OF BOARD OF PUB

They Say the Original Proposal They
Made to the City of Hot Springs
Stands Open for Acceptance.
I licrc having arisen some dispute
as to whether the city of Hot Spring
could, through the Board of Public
Affairs, buy an auto truck for the
file department on a credit basis, Gus
Strauss of this board made an in
<|uir> of the American LaFrance Com
I'anv, makers of one of the finest auto
trucks, to whit£i he received the fol
lowing telegram yesterday:
"Replying to jour telegram, the
terms and prices submitted In our bid
September 22 still hold good. Out
proposition plainly outlined in connec
tion with our written proposal sub
mitted your board that date. Can
come to Hot Springs any dale you
suggest for the purpose of closing the
deal.
AMERICAN LA FRANCE FIRE EN
GINE CO.
By .1. Ed Schmitz.
Mgr. Dallas Branch '
The proposal that had been made
the city in writing, Mr. Strauss ex
plains, is one figure of a straight cash
purchase, another figure on a basis
of part caMh and other in long credit,
and another figure on a basis of all
city credit, not one cent being neces
sary to effect tlie purchase.
At a meeting held at the Business
Men's League Tuesday evening Mayor
McClendon stated that lie had been
advised that the full^credit proposal
had been withdrawn, but that informa
tion evidently was in error, and the
company i-s still willing to sell the
city the auto truck the council au
thorized the board to buy, and to sed
on a full credit basis at tlhat.
The fire insurance agents of the
city are very much interested in the
incident for the? believe that the
prompt purchase of an additional fire
auto truck would be such a signal
of good faitli in trying to comply
with the underwriters demands, that
there would tie no more threats ot
withdrawals of the companies.
Incidentally the suggestion made by
City Attorney McLaughlin tlhat the
city go in debt $30,000 more if neces
sary to thoroughly equip Its fire
protection service, has Ween discussed
and many believe that a heavy city
debt for such a necessity would meet
approval rather than- criticism.

ANSWER IN POETRY.
Mr. Buchanan Believes in Self Preser
vation as First Law of Nature.
Editor Sentinel-Record.
When fools step in where Angels fear
to tread,
Maledictions galore are showered on
his head.
When I asked my lady friends Jor
their permission,
To advise with them regarding that
petition,
For the legal sale of liquors, as
against prohibit ion,
Some went up in the air. others lore
their hair,
And cried, "it's equal lo sedition "
My views were given with I lie best
intention,
And not for tile purpose or crating
dissension.
I told you the truth, which was hacked
up by facts,
And yet yon tire ruthless in >our
Christian (?) attacks.
Don’t (think for a moment, 1 am in
the least offended,
At what has been said regarding my
stand
For what i believe is for the best tut
least for the present)
Of tliis "My own, my native land."
T-adies and gentlemen, 1 lionur and
respect each and every one of yon
who differ with me in my views on
the matter of licensing the. sale of
liquors, as against its unlawful sale,
until the powers which are attempt
ing to deprive us of the revenue from
that source make some provision for
a substitute.
Self preservation is the first law
of nature, and 1 believe it, should ap
ply equally as well to financial and
moral matters as to physical. I think
ray' first duty is to my Jxtrd and
Master, and my next to m.v wife and
children, and then to the unfortunate
ones If we fall to protect our own
interests, how are we to obtain the
necessary means of helping those who
can not, or will not help themselves.
As I said before, while we may
differ In our Ideas, 1 still honor ami
respect you, and no one will ever
hear me speak one word derogatory
to you on that account and my ear
nest prayer is, '“My God speed the
day when the “infernal stuff’ will
be eliminated from our country, and
that time is coining so sure as we
are here today. Good bye. Yours
most respectfully,
(Advt.) S- A. BUCHANAN.

BAKING POWDER
k A Pure Cream of Tartar Powder / \
Dr. Wm. Sedgwick Saunders, Medical Officer of
Health of the City of London, Eng., was good
enough to say that a long and universal experience
has proved a cream of tartar powder the most effi
cient, safe and economical, making food which could
not be deleterious to the most delicate stomach.
In England the sale of baking powder
containing alum is absolutely prohibited.
