COUNTRY’S FINANCES HAVE BEEN MOBILIZED PREPARED TO MEET ANY SITUA TION LIKELY TO BE PRESENT ED IN NEAR FUTURE. Washington, Fob. 1C.—The nation's finances are mobilized to meet any situation likely to be presented in the near future, in the opinion of t.he fed era 1 reserve board, whose precaution pry measures undertaken upon the severance of diplomatic relations with Germany have assumed concrete form und aty believed to cover every con tingency that may arise. There is at present on deposit with ftderal reserve agents in the various reserve districts approximately $300, 000,000 in cash and the huge reserve of *600,000,000 is available at Wash ington for use wherever it may be needed. As a precautionary measure the board has requested the bureau cd engraving and printing to engrave a large additional sum of reserve notes which will be ready for use in case the occasion may arise. An estimate by George M. Reynolds of Chicago that the banks of the country are at present aide to with stand a financial strain involving eight times the sum involved in the panic of 1907 is believed by officials to be a correct aipraisal of the strength of the federal reserve sys tem The heavy demands made upon the bureau of engarvlug and printing in connection with th> issuance of new notes of the board and the issuance of the large volume of oao and two dollar treasury notes—the so-called greenbacks—recently authorised by Secretary MlcAdoo. have resulted iu the addition of approximately 75 men to the bureau's staff. It is possible tliat a force will soon be working night and day making the new money. The. unusual transportation situa tion due to the congestion of traffic has been reflected in the business done by federal reserve banks. The volume of acceptances bought rose ap pro iu mutely $30,000,000 within a week and discount rates have hardened somewhat. Felt Like 90; Now Like 21.
