Little String, Progressive, Mico Girl t and Pockichoo Justify the Favor itism of the Talent at Oaklawn. Hauovia, the winner of the six-fui long event n few afternoons ago at C.'iklawn. yesterday was never for ward at any i>art of the mile and a sixteenth event, and wrh beaten easily by Woodstone in the feature at Onk lawn. Hanovia had been installed the favorite, and from the last appear anco was apparently not only a good printer but a distance event perform or of rare merit. Woodstone, how ever, was much the best the way the race was run, aud won rather handily. Thornhill was kept forward all the way and finished third, and Julia L was used most of the route for a pacemaker, after which she retired. Uttle String. Progressive, Pockiehoo and Mieo Girl were favorites to justify the faith the talent hail pinned to their chances. Jockey Crump rode three of the winners of the afternoon, and Janies Arthur sent two of the winners to the post The track had dried out maliciously after the heavy rainfall, and some horseman proclaim tt the most wonderful track in the country in this respect. By this after I noon it is presumed thta the course will be fast One of the first racing incidents of the meeting to mar the running of an event came yesterday afternoon when Greenwood stumbled at the bar rler and unseated Jockey Stearns. The hoy went over the horse’s head but was not hurt. Greenwood had been a well followed second choice, however, and some of the talent re oelved a harder jolt than Jockey Stearns did when he toppled over. -o DEMPSEY’S TURF GOSSIP. Two of yesterday's winners changed hands after their victories, Pockicho and .Vlico Girl. The former was claimed from W. C Clancy by W. C. Weant for $1,-100, and the latter was taken from VV. C. Semple by Frazier & Farris for $l,u00 R. L. ivaker left for his home in I'flXlng’ton, Ky., yesterday He has a number of horses wintering at the Kentucky Association course in that city in charge of his brother. Jack Baker. Pif Jr., the crack route stake horse of the It I, Baker stable, and Fhir Orient will be taken to Lexington when the Jefferson Livingston horse are shipped at the conclusion of thin meeting, and Manioc sill be raced at Essex Park b.v Mose Lowensteln. Jockey Willie Crump was the brignt particular riding star yesterday, as he won half of the card with Mico Uir). Progressive and Uttle String. Crump Is the third rider to perform this feat Ht the meeting. Jockeys Frankie Mur phy and Wrerett Haynes also having ridden three winners in one day. Crump led the list of riders at the recent New Orleans meeting and bids fair to do the same thing at Oak la wn Park Trainer Jim Arthur also was mu'' in the limelight yesterday a.-, he --n two winners to the p<>-! Wood in and Progressive. This marked t: second victory for Woodstone. Horsemen and turfites were amazed u the rapidity with whit h the Oak lawn traek dried out yesterday Afte" '.he severe rainstorm of Tuesday night md early yesterday morning it looked u> though the course would he veri table sea of mud, but such was t'ni from being the ease and the going was not so bad after all Jockey H. Stearns suffered a shak 'lip up when Greenwood stumbled and unseated him right at the start of the second race Luckily Greenwood had in inside position and none of the other horses struck the rider Trainer W II. Filer tried to scratch Fleuron IT yesterday morning when it looked as though the track rntght be muddy, but as then- wore only nine in the race and the scratch limit ‘s eight he had to draw to get out and L. M Woolary, who owns Lassie Bright, out drew him Judge F'rancis Nelson, knowing of Fleuron I I s inubil it> to run in oft going, agreed to let the mare out when he got to the truck, but by that time Kuer had changed his mind and did not waut her out The Juarez detention grabbed off two rarea yesterday with Zudora anti Little String The other four win ncr* raced at New Orleans all winter For a change close finishes were not the rule yesterday, the only close fit being in the first race, in which event Zudorn beat Etta's Charm by half a length. Seldom a day passes without at leayt three close decisions at Oaklawn Park. The victory of Pookichoo yesterday > was his first since W. C.
