MORE FARMERS.
If we can get a good, industrious
farmer on every 80 or 160 acre
tract of our rich and productive
land, who will work it for all it is
worth, we would then have one of
the greatest and best farming sec
tions on the face of the globe.
This fertile land can now be
bought very cheap and there is
plenty of material on it to do all
the building necessary to a
good, comfortable home. There
are thousands of farmers in the
north and west who would only be
too glad to make homes out
of what we have to offer them
if they only knew what we have.
If they could only have the news
broke to them, they would swarm
in among us and not only build up
our farming industry but they
would make De Queen a city of
ten or fifteen thousand people, It
would only require a little effort
on our part to bring this great
change about. The Home Prod
uct show will be a great thing for
us if wo will unite and each put in
his little mite. During the expo
sition, wo should have the best
hustler wo canid get, to be on the
ground and see that every one in
attendance has a circular of some
kind, descriptive of this country.
Do not let this great opportunity
of attracting the attention of
thousands of people to this sec
tion of the country, pass by un
noticed, but let everyone put their
shoulder to the wheel, and minds
to work, and show the world
what we can do here in Southwest
Arkansas.
Died.—Henry Amos, age 61
years, at his homo near De Queen,
on July 4th, 1897. The deceased
was an old and highly respected
citizen of Sevier county, having
come here about twenty years.
He was a hard working man, and
the main cause of bis death was
overwork, which brought on a two
week's illness that ended his
life on this earth. He leaves a
wife and ten children to mourn
his loss. His remains were in
tered in the Chapel Hill cometary,
July sth. The entire community
extend the bereaved ones their
heartfelt sympathy.
Died.—Mrs. Betsy McClendon
died at the home of Eli Harris, her
grand-son-in-law, Friday, July 9th,
in her 90th year. She was born
in Lawrence county, Mo., about
1808, and removed to this county
with her father, Thomas Butcher,
at the age of nine years and lived
here until her death. She was
first married to Andrew Doliar
hide, and after his death, to Geo.
McClendon, who preceded her to
the grave many years ago. She
leaves only grand children and
great grand children to mourn her
death. She devoted a great por
tion of time to the work of the
Master, and died with the hope of
eternal peace. A large concourse
of friends followed her remains to
Chapel Hill, where she was in
tered. The Bee extends sympathy
to the bereaved ones.
Capitalists are begining to find
out that De Queen is the center
for great manufacturing industris,
and they are coming from various
points to investigate matters.
They are pleased with what they
find here and some are now mak
ing preparations to move. There
is plenty room here for all, and an
abundance of raw material. Our
merchants are all thrifty, enter
prising men and will do all in their
power for any enterprise that
tends towards building up De
Queen and Sevier county in par
ticular, and Southwest Arkansas in
general. Manufactories is what
we want, and a cordial invitation
to one and all, is extended.
Capt. and Mrs. McKean enter
tained friends, at tea, in the new
De Queen Hotel, Sunday evening
in their characteristic and elegant
manner, so peculiarly original
with them. The interior of the
Hotel is a model, and the artistic
arrangements are both pleasing to
the eye and is a guarantee of com
fort to the guests. Mrs. McKean
is not. only an accomplished, re
fined and intelligent lady, but is
an adept in the culinary depart
ment. The edibles were refresh
ing and enjoyed to the fullest ex
tent by those present; in fact,
Capt. and his estimable wife, as
sisted by their charming daugh
ters, Misses Nettie and Katie, are
royal host and hostess.
