If you want reliable information about Southwest Arkansas, sui a -ribe for the DeQuei n Bee, 75 ••nts a year to horueiet kers; sam ple copy free. Ihe Kansas City Star reporter could not have made a more sub stantial coat-of-arms for Arkansas than he did in his write-up of his trip to Alikchi; in fact two of the articles which he uses in the make up are staple articles of food for the man who toilsand produces it, cornbread and bacon. People who do manuel labor must have sub stantial food; they cannot live on tjoose liver pie and peafowl bruins with “flap-jacks and lasses’’ as hereafter. If the brilliant and gifted writer for the Star was forced to live on the good substan tial hog meat upon which he feast ed on that long to be remembered trip in the Choctaw Nation his writings might be more substan tial. It is easy to see at a glance that his humorous description of the trip was the product of a deli cate substance, something like pea-fowl brains. Whether or not he intended to convey bhe idea that this is a great country in which plenty of bacon is produced we shall not say,but we are proud to | say the people of this part of Ar kansas have plenty of good bacon and if any of the readers of the Star wish to find a place where the I hogs native atmosphere is to be found just come a ong to Arkansas and especially to Sevier county. Kr K. • r l'he south has again been visit ed by a yellow fever epidemic and while it has been scattered in va rious places over Louisiana and Texas, as well as states east of the Mississippi river, it has prac tically done its worst and is now a thing of the past. Notwithstand ing the wide territory, while other ■ towns and even counties enforced a rigid quarantine, De Queen felt no uneasiness as is evidenced by the fact that a quarantine was not even talked of seriously. While the Spanish press talks of war wiih “Uncle Sam” her finan ciers are searching the world over to find some one to lend her money to enable her to keep up a belig erent appearance till “Uncle Sam” gives her an excuse to go hame and tell the boys that she could have whipped the little handful of insurgents on the island and the little government of the United fates if they would come one at a time, but she doesn’t care to fight the whole world, that would be too expensive. It would be very humiliating to a great nation like Spain to have to confess to the world that she could not conquor little Cuba, and all she wants is some one to give her an excuse to return home peacably.
