Hence it is that we are glad to note the popu larity of singing in Sevier county. We have our Fifth Sunday Sing ings, our All-Day Singings, our Neighborhood Singings, our Sing ing Clubs and our Singing Scohols. It would not he inappropriate to call Sevier the Song County. Even nature joins the harmonious swell with the song of the mocking bird and the nightingale and other sweet-throated warblers who are 1 glad to he among the beautiful forest trees and flower gardens, and celebrate with incomparable music the victories that are being won on the farm, in the orchard and garden and in the busy marts of trade. • # « # Whatever may be the situation at other times of the year, during the season when the orchards and gardens are yielding their fruits, the Bee positively refuses to be terrifled by the high cost of liv-| ing. Good things just naturally percolate into the sanctum. Dur-1 ing the past week we have receiv ed peaches, plums, grapes and cantaloupes from the J. I). Brizen-j dine fruit farm, plums from the orchard of A. E. Hedges, toma toes from the garden of ('has. Wolverton, peaches from the Thomas Bell orchard, apples from the A. Johnson orchard, and pota toes from the garden of T. C. Watt, all of the products being choice specimens of choice varieties. Truly the law of compensation finds full and adequate expression in the pleasant pa lime of editor ial disquisition. # # # # An old landmark near the lx. U. S. depot, on De Queen avenue, is being torn down. It is a one-story frame building in which, once up on a time, spirits were wont to abide. On the cement sidewalk, in front of the building is this in scription, "Take One for Luck." It is part of De Queen's history that, on a certain night some boys made forcible entry and took sev eral. They had luck, but it was bad luck, for they were appre hended and compelled to serve the state for a considerable period for small, if any, pay. We hope they are having better luck now. • • • • All is quiet along the border. The wave of troopers flowing in ev n ry direction to the Mexican boundary line has had a wonder ful influence on the language of Carranza and the actions of his warriors, The bodies of the Am erican heroe who fell at I'arri zal have been brought in state from the field of battle to the city of El Paso and laid to rest with military honors. The Mexican di- plomat is soft-spoken, and even Villa and his bandits are taking a vacation in the deep recesses of the mountains. War clouds seem to have vanished. But still there appears to be some powder in the magazine, but should a straj match cause a conflagration Un cle Sam’s hundred thousand or more boys in bronze will doubt less be able to put out the fire be fore it spreads very far. * * * * H. P. ROELKER Former De Queen Citizen Dies at Jonesboro Jonesboro, July 11.—H. P. Roel ker, 38 years old, assistant mana ger of the New Warner hotel, was found dead in his room early this morning. A coroner’s jury ren dered a verdict of death by heart failure. He is survived by three sisters and a brother in Richmond, Va. The body will be buried here tomorrow morning with services by the Elks’ lodge. HOUSE BURNED SUNDAY Lockesburg Tribune. About 3 o’clock Sunday after noon a dense smoke was seen aris ing in a northeasterly direction from Lockesburg. It proved to be the house of Mr. Ola Westbrook who lives on the Chinoworth farm. All the buildings are reported to have been lost and all the effects of Mr. Westbrook. He and his family were visiting at the home of Mr. Charlie Bell at the time. C HANGE IN BANK OF COVE Mena Star. R. Goff, while at Cove last Sat urday, closed a deal whereby he disposed of his interest in the Bank of Cove to F. F. Roark of Hatfield. In the reorganization that took place after the sale was consummated, F. F. Roark was elected president, Frank Roark, Jr., vice president, W. C. Martin, secretary and cashier and George Roark, assistant cashier. SLIGHTLY DIS Uta RED Lockesburg Tribune. Tuesday afternoon Merry Sharp and another gentleman were driv ing out of town on the Nashville road. The axle of their car struck a stump that was hidden by some weeds, and bent itself double. The occupants took different di rections through the air and made successful flights, but Mr. Sharp had trouble in alighting. A.-> a result his face is painfully cut and swollen, b»<t not seriously in jured. The other gentleman was I more fortunate. As to the car. it i.-' iaid up for repairs and is in a worse fix than Mr. Sharp. The old business was attended to and new committees were ap pointed to look after the place for the new church building. The next club meeting will be with Mrs. M. House, and let each one try and be present and answer to the roll call with a current event. —Reporter. 1 ’RES BYTERIA X WOM AN’S MISSIONARY SOCIETY The Woman’s Missionary So ciety of the First Presbyterian church met Tuesday afternoon, with Mesdames Milton Harris and Bales. Goodwin, a famous Illi nois bneder of Aberdeen- Angus cattle. Mr. Hummer thinks the lines well worth passing on to The Progressive Farmer readers and we heartily agree with him: "And I have said, and I say it ever. A Thought For Tomorrow: If your school is closed for lack of funds, how will your children l>e educated? Prevent the closing by working and voting for Amendment No. 12. Opponents of educational amendent No. 12 are trying to mislead the voter* by crying "increased taxes!" If this measure is adopt ed, your community cannot raise the tax rate except by a deliberate, regul '.r majority vote of your citizens. Don't Forget this. Amendment No. 12 to the Constitution has men “for ami agin" it all over the state. If you want better comfortable school houses vote for it : but if you hud rather spend your cash for automobiles, fast horses and hiuh living, take the other end of the road Mon ticellonian (Monticello.)
