METHODS HER - AND ABROAD.
Ways of Steering Bont.s in England,
France anti Germany.
A comparison of the different meth
ods of doing what is practically the
same thing in various parts of the world
is both interesting and amusing'to the
thoughtful observer, says Cassier’s
Magazine. On American ferryboats the
import is well known of the “ting-ting”
or “jingle-jingle” of the bell by which
the man in the wheelhouse communi
cates with his fellow mortal in the en
gine room. On the Thames, however,
it would be considered practiicaJly im
possible to convey information in this
| manner, and the captains of the small
paddle steamers on that stream stand
on the paddle boxes and sing out:
“Rase ’er!” “Back ’er!” etc., apparently
! to nobody in particular, >\hile these in
teresting remarks are promptly repeat
ed iu shrill tones by a. small boy into a
speaking tube which communicates
with the lower regions. On the Seine,
in France, this process is simplified
and a large trumpet-shaped mouth
piece flares out in front of the man at
the wheel, and he yells liis commands
into this funnel, the other end of which
is supposed to reach the engineer. The
, large steamers on the Rhine, in Ger
many, are controlled, not by the usual
wheel placed in the wheelhouse for
ward, bub by a very large wheel on a
vertical axis, placed right amidships
upon an elevated platform or bridge,
and several men pass the handles from
right to left, or upon occasion trot
round in a circle, and it would doubt
less be considered a serious temptation
of Providence, or at least a re
flection upon the fatherland, if anyone
were to attempt to construct a Rhine
steamer with the ordinary form of
I steering gear.

One day a wonderful bird tapped at
the window of Mrs-. Nansen’s home art
Christiania. Instantly the window was i
opened and ‘the wife of the famous
Arctic explorer in another moment cov
ered the little messenger with kisses
and caresses. The carrier pigeon had
been away from the cottage 30 long
months, but it had not forgotten the
way home. It brought a note from
Nansen stating that all was going well
with him and liis expedition in the
polar regions.
Nansen, had fastened a message to a
carrier pigeon and turned the bird loose.
The frail courier darted out into the i
blizzardy air. It flew like an arrpw
over a thousand miles of frozen waste,
and then sped forward over another
thousand miles of ocean and plains arid
forests, and one morning entered the
window of the waiting mistress and de
livered the message which she had been
awaiting so anxiously.
We boa.st of human pluck, says the
New York Mail and Express, sagacity
and endurance, but this loving little
carrier pigeon, in its homeward flight
after an absence of 30 months, accom
plished a feat so wonderful that we
can only give ourselves up to the amaze
ment and admiration which must over
whelm everyone when the marvelous
story is told. "Mrs. Nansen’s pigeon is
one of the wonders of the world.

The most grew some apartment in
America is probably the demonstrator’s
room in the Flower hospital in New
York, with its fantastic decorations of
dead men’s bones.
The name of the room is spelled above
the door in letters made of finger hones.
Upon the wall within appears in the
same grewsome lettering the names of
Dr. Howard iS. Neilsome and Dr. North
way Meyer, demonstrators- Besides
these legends sits a grinning human
skull.
Crossing and recrossing the room
strings of bones interlace. Ribs alter
nates with the slender bones of Ungers
and toes. Up and down the walls, like
ghastly white serpents, crawl coils of
verterbrae. Arm and leg bone* with
highly polished surfaces are hung on
the cupboards.
Every where the eye turns in this
curious charnel house sympols of mor
tality start into reli if. But it is on the
large table against the south wail that
death veritably sits enthroned. In
the middle, heaped into a mound, hones
from all parts of the human name are
surmounted by a skull. Here a hand,
there a crippled foot, a cranium hol
lowed into a drinking ctip—oddities of
all grisley shapes surrounded the
mound.
In a chair to the right sits a skele
in a leisurely attitud , leaning one
arm upon the table as he watches the
skeletons over which the sunlight
dances.
