BUILDING 10 BE AT CAMP PIKE fLittle Rock, Nov. 24—A military .mp mav be no place for a woman ut there is going to be one camp hat has the benefit of a woman’s ouch no matter what the allied lowers mav say about woman’s pres nce in such places. This is Camp >ike and the decision of Major Gen nd Sturgis to permit the erection a hostess house there is the irowning feat of the war service ward It Is also the first of the atensive program of the War Serv ce Board to become an actuality. When V. M. <1 A. buildings, Knight of Columbus Club houses, and various other buildings were being located, it was suggested that the [women should have a chance to make Camp Pike a good place for young men to be turned loose in. The big, blustering men of war scoffed at the idea and would have none of it. This old style war horse did not get away with it, however, for Major General Samuel D. Sturgis has the last say, and in some way the propisltlon was laid before him. Here is a man who has not forgotten there is 99 per cent boy in every lad 1 that comes to Camp Pike, nor hats | he forgotten that he was once him-| self a boy, and in his memory lingers the picture of a soft voice to encourage when the world seems all up hill. Major General Sturgis did not hesitate. He said right off the reel that there would be a Hostess > House, provided the Young Women's Christian Association would agree to operate it. The Y. W. C. A. consented and today The finishing touches are being put to a neat cottage that seems all windows, which stands on a knoll, surrounded by headquarters of vari ous regiments, and right in the very center of the camp. The Hostess House is the closest building of any sire to the railroad station. The Hostess House was given this location because it is intended fiorr j a rest place for mothers who come to visit their sons. It is to be made pleasant in every detail, with its rest rooms, recreation parlors, and big sun parlors w'here light lunches will be served to those who care to par take of them. .Major General Sturgis has gone a step further. He has ordered a stone walk constructed from the depot 10 1 the Hostess House, and he will main-1 tain a detail at the station to escort all women who come to the camp to the Hostess House, where the matron will attend to their wants. If it is a mother who comes to see her son, the matron will get in com munication with the barracks of his company, and see that he is imme diately notified. If It is a wife to see a husband, or sweetheart to see her fiance, they will be called over the telephone, and if it is not pos sible for them to come, an orderly will accompany the visitor to the hospital or barracks where the loved one may be found. The Little Rock Y. W. C. A., which is governed by prominent society women, will supply the hostesses for the building, one for each day. In this manner the "building will always be in charge of a capable woman, and the visitors are assured of every attention. General Sturgis contends that wo men visiting the camp will soon see that military life has dulled none of the finer instincts of the men, and if anything has increased their spirit of chivalry. He wants the women to come to the camp, believing that a visit from mother, sister or sweet heart occasionally makes a soldier strut a bit, and when he struts he is satisfied with himself and the life he is leading.
