(Arkansas Gazette) How a home-made silo was made and has proved very satisfactory is explained in a recent letter from Victor C. Kays, principal of the first district state agricultural school of Jonesboro, to Littrell McClung, pub licity man for the International Har vester Company. The cost of mate rial usecKin building the silo was $ 101.90TW*lr~'.~J “ ' did the work. The following is Mr. Kays’ letter: “Your letter of Wednesday receiv ed today. I will tell you as briefly as possible about the home-made silo which we built here at the agricultur al school at Jonesboro, five years ago, and which is still giving 11s good service. “We obtained the plans and speci fications for this ‘Modified Wiscon sin Type Silo’ from the dairy divis ion of the United States department of agriculture. These may be had by any farmer by writing to the de partment at Washington, D. C. This silo is 14 by 30 feet, with nine-inch concrete foundation, and six-inch concrete floor. A circle 14 feet in diameter made of inch material, four inches wide and doubled, making it two inches thick, was fastened in place on the foundation by bolts set in the fresh concrete when the foun rloUmi Tiro0 tyiqHo T'wn hu ffiur 12 inches apart, on center, were nail ed to this circle. One half of these were 14 feet in length and one-half 1G feet in length. These were so arranged that the splices in the stud ding were alternately 14 and 1G feet from the foundation. The first studs were held in place by circles 14 feet and eight inches in diameter made of telephone wire, and the studs were spaced by fastening them to the wire circles with staples. The tops of inch material, similar to the circular sill above mentioned. “After carefully plumbing, guying and anchoring the studs, the struc ture was curbed tightly on the in side of the studs with 3-S inch cy press boards, six inches wide. The inside of this cypress curbing was then covered with a layer of acid proof building paper. Then a sec-, ond layer of 3-8 inch cypress was put over the building paper in such a way as to lap the cracks and break the joints of the first layer of cy press. This cypress is best obtained by using 1x6 cypress, sized on four sides, which has been resawed, thus making two 3-8 inch boards from each inch board purchased. The outer layer of cypress should be placed with the sized sides out and the inner layer should be placed with the sized sides in. This will bring the acid proof paper between the two resawed surfaces, and will leave the islo smooth both on the inside and outside. Four penny lathing nans snouia ue usea ior nailing mis cypress. No boards with loose knots should be used. The roof may be made to suit the convenience of the owner, usually some cheap, prepared roofing is used rather than shingles. The doors may be made of 1x6 ton-' gued and grooved pine flooring. These should be 18x2 4 inches in size, and be placed from four to six feet apart, as the owner desires. “The cost of materials used in the Modified Wisconsin Type Silo' at the first agricultural school at Jonesboro, is as follows: 1,000 feet 2x4 studding, $7.50. 1,600 feet 3-8 inch cypress, $72. 300 feet No. 2 6 inch flooring for sheathing and door, $4.50. 2 rolls acid proof building paper, $3. 100 pounds nails, $2.60. 2 rolls prepared roofing $3.20. 3 yards gravel $3.75. 3 barrels cement $5.40. Total, $101.90. ; “One man and a boy did the work. ! “The silo holds, when filled to the ■oof, about 110 tons and the cost of abor was $18 or $20, making the iilo cost approximately $1 fp* each on capacity. The cost of the two liece stave pine silo of this size •anges from $223 to $250, without he foundation or cost of erection. Are have found that the ensilage has cept excellently in this home-made dlo, and can see no difference in the >alatability or loss between that vhich is kept In the home-made and hat in the stave silo. Any farmer v.ho is handy with tools and will use •rdinary care, can build his own silo n this way, with the directions and Irawings which he may obtain either rom the United States department >f agriculture at Washington.
