The Democratic party in con vention assembled renews its al legiance to the National Demo cratic riatform adopted at Chica go, in IS9G. We believe the free coinage of silver and gold at the ratio of 16 to 1, to be the paramount issue be fore the people of this nation, and until settled rightly it should be the supreme question in every election whether national or local. We commend the administration ol Gov. Adams as wise, honest and patriotic. We commend the action of the two Democ&tic county commission ers of Baca county, for their at. tempt at economy by accepting $3 per day for work done by them, instead of taking $5.00 per day as the law allows. We commend their wisdom in this step, recognizing their good business ability in attempting to run the county within the income as at present received, without raising the levy and making our taxes burdensome. It is with sincere regret that we note the unwillingness and refusal of our present officers to cooperate with the two Democratic members of the board of county commission ers, and perform their duties and accept remuneration in the same magnanimous spirit as the two members of the board have done. The Democratic party has al ways been a conservative and e conornical one, and we demand a rigid system adopted for control ing the running expenses of Baca county, and we pledge our candi dates, if elect ed, to perlorm their official duties in full accord with tins platform. We believe, that, in the impov erished condition ol the county, and the few people remaining to bear the burden of taxation, that the oflices can be creditably filled and the worked performed at a rate not exceeding $3.00 per day. We believe further, that the office of county clerk should bead ministered at a coot to the county, ot, not exceeding S4OO per annum; that of treasurer, not exceeding $550; that of superintendent of schools, not exceeding $350; that, of assessor, not exceeding $350; t hat of sheriff not exceeding $350, and, that the members of the board of county commissioners should as full pay. Also that the county clerk, assessor and superintendent of schools, accept the same per diem. We believe that these prices should prevail until the county can be run on its income, without increasing its floating debt or rais ing the tax levy. Candidates. G. E. Ivonkel, the economy can didate lor county clerk, was born in lowa in 1870 but was raised in Crawford county Kansas. His parents moving from lowa to Kan sas while he was less than a year old. He came from Kansas to Colorado in the fall of 18S6. and has resided continuously here up to this time, with the exception of one year he spent in the state of his birth. lie began to teach six years ago and has since followed that as Ins profession, farming and attending to Ins stock interests while out ol the school room. lie stands in the front rank as a teacher and is now engaged in his second term at Springfield, lie is well equipped to perform the duties required of tiie county clerk and recorder. Alf B. Allen, candidate lor Co. Treasurer, was born in Hancock county Illinois in 18G7, but spent most of his boyhood days in Mis souri. He was among the earliest settlers in tins section. He took a complete course in the business department of Tillottson Academy live years ago, that fits him for any position that requires expert book keeping. While E. F. Mar tin was county treasurer of Baca county Mr. Allen acted as deputy and done the difficult book work. He is perfectly familiar with the work of that office and if elected will attend to it in a creditable manner. Jesse W. White the nominee for assessor was born in Kentucky where he lived till the Kansas boom found him on a homestead in Stanton county. lie moved to Colorado four years ago. He served two years in Kentucky as deputy county clerk which gives Inin an insight to working for the public. If elected he will do the work incumbent on a county as sessor in an impartial and busi nesslike manner. He writes a good hand and is familiar with the necessity of the county in securing a lull list of all property. Mrs. Elizabeth 11. Shannon the nominee lor Countv Superin tendent. ot schools is the wile of Vinton M. Shannon, residing ten miles northeast of Springfield. She was born in Monmouth, Illi nois ISG4. She finished tfie high school of Monmouth and attended Monmouth College three years. She also carries a diploma from the "Western Illinois business col lege, of Monmouth. She first taught school in the country, then the villages and finally filled the place of Principal of one ot the Ward schools of Monmouth, for five years. She was deputy county treasurer under her uncle two years at Beatrice, Gage countv, Nebraska, one ot the wealthiest counties in the state. She came directly from Beatrice to Baca county one year ago last spring. It is not necessarv to state that she is competent to fill the office for which she stands as a candi date. Frank Newberry, our candidate for sheriff* has resided in Baca county since 18S7, in the eastern part near the Kansas line, with his mother who is over 80 years ol age. lie was born in Barren county Kentucky in ISGI and served two years as under sheriff in the county of his birth. lie has spent seven years of his life in Texas and served as under sheriff in Lamar county that state. He came from Texas to Colorado. lie is a young man ot good habits and tearless. With his former experience lie will make a good officer if elected, which he should be. E. Hall who is the nominee for commissioner in Dist. No. 1 is known to almost every one in the county, and his superior qualifi cations for I lie office are acknowl SPRINGFIELD, BACA COUNTY, COLORADO, FRIDAY, OCTOBER, 15, 1897. was born in Morgan county Ten nessee in 1842, spent 23 years of his life at Chamois, Mo., just prior to coming to Colorado in 188 G. lie attends strictly to his business of handling cattle and is making a success of it. Those who have linci dealings wiili him say he is strictly honest and con scientious. He is an inveterate economist and hated by the high salary office seekers accordingly. Samuel L. Florey who is running for the same office of county com missioner in' the 2nd district, to fill vacancy, is a young man who stnmls well at, homo, pleasant and agreeable with ability to perform the work ol the office lie seeks with credit to himself and the county, lie was born in Pcnn svlvania in ISG3, resided ono year in Kansas and the rest of his life up to the present in this county, being among the very earliest settlers in the southeast portion. He has been engaged in farm ing and cattle raising in the past 11 years, but is a carpenter by trade. That Comparison. Wc have been asked for a coin pairson of the salaries and fees al lowed county officers in years past, with the salaries pioposod by the convention ol October 2. Wc shall revert to the semi an nual statements as published by the county clerk in making this companion and the figures will be official: The amounts as shown by the statements does not show what each person as such officer lias re ceived but simply what the offices have cost the county. For in stance in some ol the years two or more officers received the amount giyen instead of one receiving all ol it. "Where bills are Jeft over, or for any cause not acted upon, an ex-officer may get an allow ance, and it is shown bv the state incuts against the office at the time of allowance. J. M. Watson as an assessor got an allowance that would not show in a state ment published while he was in office. It is an account with the office and not the man. Yet the total amounts paid from the be ginning of our existence as a county, in any office, has gone to the persons who have held that of fice. To get at what each one re ceived individually it would be necessary to go to the commiss ioner’s record and take all bills al lowed to each, which would be somewhat tedious, and entail con siderable work. The semi-annual statements show that the following amounts have been paid by the county for the office and year indicated: Y«*ar. 1882. | 1891. | 1891. | IHOS. | 18V..
