Last weeks issue of the Demo crat contained on two pages a lot of material purporting to be in the interests of local option as against state wide prohibition, signed by the“Co!orado Busi ness Men’s Home Rule League.” Before the people accept unqual ifiedly tho statements given out by this “Home Rule League”, it is due to them to know just what this League is, in whose interests it is working, and what are its purposes. The “Colorado Business Men’s Home Rule League" is nothing more nor less than the Brewers’ Organization .of this state, mas querading under that name. It is working solely in the interests of the brewers, the distillers, and and the saloon-keepers. Its pur pose is to defeat, if possible, the adoption of the prohibitory a mendment that is to be submit ted to the people of our state this fall. It is fighting for local option because the liquor inter-j ests favor local option in prefer ence to state-wide prohibition, and have so declared. The only object this League has, as is easi ly inferred from the stuff it pub lishes, is to defeat prohibition. To do tiiis, it is buying space in all the papers it can in which to publish its sophistical arguments against prohibition. A few weeks ago tile editor of the Democrat told me he had contracted with this League for its material. I am sorry to see the Democrat espouse the.cause of the brewers in this way. Of course, as could only be ex pected, the stuff sent out by this League is wholly in the interests of anti-prohibition. Allot it is misleading, while much of it is an 'absolute pefverstoiinrt* tiv* truth, as any one conversant with the facts regarding prohibi tion in this country, well knows. To instance only one case, as fol lows: It cites Gov. Plaisted of Maine in support of its utterly false statements that prohibition lias failed in Maine and that ■ the j people of Maine are clamoring for a repeal of their prohibition law. Whereas the facts are that Plaisted and his anti-prohibition sentiments have been utterly re pudiated by the people of Maine, | they having just recently defeat ed him for re-election as govern or of Maine, electing in his stead William T. Haines, the prohibi tion candidate. If this reveals anything concerning the senti ment of the people of Maine in regard to prohibition, it certainly reveals that they are satisfied with it and want it to continue. This is just a sample of the false and perverting statements of tiiis League. But when did the liquor interests ever tell the truth? To do so would be for them to commit suicide. I sup pose we will continue to hear from this League through the columns of the Democrat until tlie election in November, but I want the people to read with their eyes open. C. C. Wilkinson.
