In ordering a change of addreae, be aure to give both the old address and the new. Jas Stinson was in town Tuea- ' day. Attorneys Cole and Merrill are| in town today. T. V. Nidey cuinmuted his des ert claim yesterday, Albert Rey i nolds and Win. Keating witness j into Harry Ward, ex-county treas- 1 urerof Baca county, now of Daw- 1 ney, Idaho, caure down last, week to be at the betside of his j brother Tom, who is very low with pneumonia. Justice Jones and W. s. Math ias of stonington were Herald callers Tuesday. As several justice cases in stonington are brewing, both these gentlemen are enthusiastic for that second court house—for stonington, and declare they are going to give Two Buttons the run of their lives for that second base. THE MORAL OF THE CASE It isn’t for the Herald to crit icise the findings of the jury in the ltiner murder trial. We be lieve the twelve men on the jury to have been sincere and honest in the conclusion reached. The dillerence of opiniun of mankind is the | mint of view tak en; and in the conclusions thus reached ordinarily individuals are sincere, though their views •nay -»e opposite. Aside however from the legal pha c **s 01 a killing case, where !,w. men threaten each other and arm tor ‘*ach other, there is a moral ide that the public is forced to take cognizance of and giv»* consideration to. The particular moral to the Miner and similar cases is this: That if a man may kill another who has mad*, threats and goes armed —and go Scott free, all any two men need do, in self just ification, is to threaten each oth er and go armed, and either plug the other at sight, and ride on about his business. There was a time when, if either of two men wanted to kill the other, all he had to do was to provoke him to and kill him in a duel—and for many centuries the public, justifed the killing. The moral justification of sucli killiners, however, was finally tak en into consideration by the pub lic, with the result that at pres ent to so kill your fellow man is to be guilty of murder, the same as if you had met him on the highway aud shot him down. We do not believe that in this country and in this age it is uec essary for any man to go armed to protect himself and find, often that when for such purpose they carry a gun ir their pockets they also carry a chip on their shoulders. We are not considering the Mi ner case from its legal aspects - that is for the court and the ju ry. It’s the moral phases of sucli killings that here concern 1 us, ami that concerns the general, public as a purely abstract prop-1 osition. I Th • moral problem reduces it-1 10 this: Should either of two i en be punished who threat*! ei uh other and aim for each o’: and ill** one gets his op* p. oity to plug the othei —or m i such threats and such c :ea passport to freedom?
