than they do by going tocomic opera. Missouri is
one of our national plea nan tries and helps make
life happier in this commercial and busy nation.
Missouri is a plain, downright oldfashiened state
and is proud of it. It has 3,300,0(10 people divided
into two classes—those who call it "Mizzoury"
and love it and those who call it "Missoura” and
wish it had more society and less mules. It is the
seventh state in population, the third in corn, 0th
in rai!road8. sixth in number of school children
first in mules and first in incredulity. Owing to
the passion which Missourians have for "being
shown" and showing each other up, politics in
the state has been an earnest and wakeful opera
tion for the last seventy years.
Missouri is modern at the eastern end in St.
Louis Hnd at its western in Kansas City. It is also
being modernized in the legislature at Jeffers-m
City, the capital. It is historic along the Mississ
ippi. with a French accent, unreconstructed in
Clay county, and primitive in the Ozarks win* e
the locomotive is less familiar to the children th n
the Ozarks. It is divided into two varying pans
by the restless Missouri river, and by the local o. -
tion fight. It has produced Mark Twain, ti e
James boys, Joseph Folk. Adolphus Busch, the
science of osteopathy and the new Democratic
hymn, "They gotta quit kickin’ my dnwg aroun."
Missouri is so backward that antebellum picnics
are still held in some parts and is so advanced that
when an octopus reaches a tentacle across the
state line, said tentacle is cut off and hung up
in the state as a trophy.
Missouri was settled 159 years ago, but has re
mained unsettled ever since. 11 fought itself vig
orously in the civil war and has been revolving
politically with extreme rapidity. It was once
’ ths fifth state in population in the union, but has
| been passed by Massachusetts and Texas, owing
j to th-j vaj t number of Missourians who strayed
j across the state line at Kansas and St Louis-
I and have settled on suburban but alien soil. How
| ever, one Missouri man can brzate as much inter
est and excitement as two ordinary men and the
state will never be unimportant.—George Mathew
