The snowdrifts which have hung around our houses ai d 'barns for two months like ghosts have gone at last, and we are g ! ad. January was a model month throughout. Hardly a day but thawed some, notwithstanding this it took the whole month to melt away December’s snow' j Since the snow embargo has (been lifted travel cn our road has ! been resumed on our road. We j are glad to Low to the public 1 again, 'for after all it is good pec i pie stirring about that makes pleasant living. Warren Givens and neighbor Everson were callers at the Hill on Saturday. The latter informs me that fie has three children in school this winter and that they walk four miles in search of book learning, Joe, Iver and Joanna Evtrtcn will get there at this rate—all they want is a chance. Allen Warren, of near Arapa hoe, went to Denver last week to appear before aU. S. recruit ing officer with the view of join ing the regular military service. If accepted, we hespeak for Al len a successful career, for he has mechanical qualities which will bring him into nntice and ulti mate prominence. Ed. Kent has an extension of 30 days on his furlough, then lie will return to Leavenworth, Kansas, and await further orders from his commander. Dr. and Mrs. Reed Calkins have enjoyed his home coming. This fall Ed will be mustered out and become a civilian, and likely practice the veterinary profession, winch he has given special attention to in the army. Birthdays are great beginnings to us all. Each succeeding anni versary is almost as much so. They are mile posts wrh finger boards pointing ahead. Monday was the writers wife’s birthday, and as good fortune would have it, it was also Mrs. Jtsse Dun ton’s. By previous arrangement we all dined together at Mr. and Mrs. Dur.ton’s on that day, we had a good dinner and a good time, for these are good people. They are also live wires, art! keep things moving on the ranch, land are valuable members of so ciety. We wish them many hap py returns of the day. Walter L. Bales, editor of the Excelsior Springs Standard fa vors the writer with a copy of his ably edited paper of Jan. 30. Among the many things.of inter est we note that at a mass meet ing of the city Democrats that he was elected secretary of the Central Committee. Mr. Bales devotes two columns of his paper to carefully written paragraphic editorials on current topics. One we note of concern to us all, that on Feb. Ist the express compan ies put into effect a new schedule of rates cutting old rates nearly half in two and this will acrue to the benefit of the people and the Democratic party is to thank for it. After a two months blockade in our road, the writer and wife attended church at Arapahoe on Sunday ,Rev. H. H. Gane preach- , ed to the people. His theme was * j “Hpw to avoid ti e Dark Moun tains.” Pride ancl other forms :of sin tended to inflate the hu j man out.of his God given sphere.^ ! Humility was heavtns grace to I enable him to be beautiful even in God’s eyes. After sirvice we were nicely entertained at diuner at Bro. Ganes, himself, wife and five children, make thtm of that goodly scriptural number, seven. They are snugly housed in the new pars mage. The children are fine good pictures of health, while the parents have not yield ed as readily to onr talutary cli mate. We enjoyed u-r two hours social time and big dinner. Miss Margaret Wilson, the President’s daughter, addressed a meeting in Washington, D. C., onxivic improvement. She ad vocates the use of country school houses as social centers she said: ( ‘‘The social center movement in the final analysis is the funda mental principle of Democracy. . No matter how cultured we are, we cannot get ideas alone, and we must get together and get them from each other.” So we gathered from the St. Louis Re public on Wednesday. Our teach ers and other progressive citizens are being animated by this same idea ar.d are carrying on debating societies over the country and in this way cultivating the social virtues while gaining broader views in the mutual exchange of opinions. First View and Arapa hoe are furnishing some notable examples along this line. Let the good work go on. ARAPAHOE. Mrs, G. F. Kibbee is visiting with relatives south of town this weejt. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Dunton and family visited at the home of S. S. Eash Sunday. Mrs. Luella Sawyer, and small daughter, is spending this week with her parents and sister, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Abernathy and Charlotte. Clyde Owen departed for his home in New Castle, Wyo., after spending several mon'ths with relatives here. IVlrs. Dodson and daughter. Hazel, visited at the Loster home Saturday evening and attended the Beek dance. Another great success was the dance at Fred Beek’s, if you don’t believe it, ask someone what time they got home. There was about 65 there, several from Sheridan Lake. Tne news came to town last Wednesday that grandpa Blood’s house had burned down, his daughter, Inez, had her trunk packed fo go back east to her husband, and we understand everything burned but her coat and hat. and nothing was save I in the house. We extend sympa thies. • One of the greatest events that has ever been recorded in Chey enne county's history was enjoy • ed by about 60 persons last Thursday night, the event being a banquet given by The Ladies Social Circle in I heir building, (the chapel), each member had the right to invite one person, so those who did not have husbands invited others. Grand success, it surely was. The chapel was arranged most artistically and the table was grand, it would take quite awhile and lots of room to explain the good things there was to eat, and the numerous toasts that were given which could only be heard to be appre ciated, and the music good talks and everything, can only be ex plained by saying it was surely a grand success. But that only spalls what everything the I.adiea Social Circle does.
