CO ’ f iOHEYENfTE WELLS, - COLORADO CHEYENNE WELLS, CHEYENNE COUNTY, COLORADO, THURSDAY, AUGUST 17. 1922 Five Persons Drowned In Brandon Lake Last Sunday morning a party pleasure seekers from Bristol, Colo., motored to the Brandon lakes where they intended spend ing the day on a fishing trip. As we understand the situation the party had with them a home made boat which they intended using on the lake for fishing and pleasure purposes which they brought with them. On arriving at the lakes the party and their baggage were unloaded and they proceeded to make plans for the day. There were a couple of families and several children in the party and were taking turns in enjoying a ride in the boat. One load had successfully made a safe journey about the lake when they returned and deliver ed the bout to the unfortunate people who were drowned. Duncan Coe, AI Tuxhorn, Har old and Howard Shy, of this city had went to the lakes the night before and spent the night there and wi re just packing up their camp outfit when they heard the cries of the party on the lake for help. Looking out onto the lake the boy 8 were horror stricken to see two women, a small ehild and two men struggling in the water for their lives. The boys as fast as possible got their boat out into the waters and tried to reach the unfortunate victims of the lake but were unable to reach them in time to save any of the lives. The bodies of the two women the little three year old girl and one man was brought to shore by the boys, they then returned to try and find the other body but Were unsuccessful In their attempt. Opening Dates Of School High School will open here on Tuesday, Septmber sth. Will those who can take either boys or girls to room or board, or who can take someone to work for their board, please report the matter to me as pupils are begin ning to look up their locations for the winter. W. E. Graves Read the “news” in the Valore Hardware company ‘news sheet' this week. Tom O’Brien, of Hoven, S. D., and Geo. O’Brien, of Seneca, S. D., arrived in .Cheyenne Wells on Monday evening and spent a couple of days here on a visit to to their mother and sister and many friends. The boys are now both full fledged bankers, Tom is president of the Hoven State Bank in his city, while George is Vice President of the Seneca State Bank. They were greatly surprised in the appear ance of the old home town and were highly pleased with our prosperous conditions. In order to keep an eye on conditions here, Tom added his name to our list which will give him all the hap pings of the city. In this issue of the Record will be found a change in advertise ment of the Nispel Land Com pany which we call your atten tion to. These people have just lately taken over the agency in this territory for the Cheverlot cars and parts and are going to make a success of this business as they have others. During the week they have sold to Miss Ethel Shy one of their Utility Coupes which Miss Ethel is now enjoying, also a five passenger touring to J. S. Baber and sons. Wednesday was a big day for Cheyenne Wells there being sev eral hundred people brought here on account of the biff lot and acreage sale held in the west part of the city by the National Town site company, of Omaha, Nebr. We Are Located In One of the Best Farming Districts of This State Looking For Location ! T. A. Kirk Has A Visitor Last Friday evening as Chas. Kirk was coming into Cheyenne Wells from his home at Kit Car son his Ford decided that it had ran far enough and wanted to rest so absolutely stopped right in the middle of the road two miles east of First View. Charley being a good natured fellow, got out tightened up a few wires, screws, burs and what-not and tried to coax the thing for a few more miles but without success, be finally aband oned Liz. Returning the next morning to try his luck once more Charley was dumb founded to find that some thief had ap propriated to his own use the four casings, plugs, light bulbs, carburetor and in fact everything that could be taken from a Ford. Making out a new list of supplies needed be returned to town pur chased same and left for the scene. “For the love of Mike” says Charley during bis absence this time the culprits had remov ed one of the wheels. Charley this time picked up the “carcus” and carried it to town for over hauling. The new steel bridge across the smokey creek about three north of Salis, will be completed this week. In the completion of this bridge it will shorten the distance considerable for those who are hauling wheat to the local elevators and also give to the people of that neighborhood a very good crossing on this creek We are also informed that the material for another new bridge across this same creek north of First View is on the ground and that the county boys will move their tools there this week to begin its erection. There is no use talking that Stratton ball club has certainly got the jinx on Cheyenne Wells for some cause or other. In the game which was played at Strat ton last Sunday the local team had no grounds to loose it as the score was all in our favor in the early part of the game. It just seemed that we could not play ball and the number of errors made on both sides would fill the Denver Pest sport page. After the errors were chalked up the score was then tallied and we had the short end which read seven and eight. N. 6. Robertson, the orchard man, informs us that his big adv in this paper last week has cer tainly done the business for him and that he has been getting all kinds of results from it. Well, we are not surprised at that one bit, we knew it would get results for him as well as our other good advertisers. The band concert held Sunday afternoon drew the largest at tendance that has been recorded for several weeks and was in deed enjoyed by all who heard it Board Of County Commissioners Proceedings Cheyenne Welle, Colo.
