Some of the Stories Heard Yesterday and Briefly Retold.—What Was Said and Done in the Town in a Day. A good rain right now would be worth many thousand dollars to the farmers of Sumter. Their cotton fields are being parched by the very intense heat. Let all the veterans who can do so attend the meeting at city hall this morning and aid in the undertaking to have an old soldiers reunion here in September. Will Dudley has leased the store in the Windsor Hotel block, next to the telephone exchange, and will remove his bicycle business there when the store is fitted up again. The number of hay wagons seen daily upon Americus’ streets would indicate that the farmers of Sumter were not neglecting that important crop, even for king cotton at nine cents. The Huntington barbecue next Fri day is pleasantly anticipated by hun dreds here who are going down to that feast royal. Twenty fine porkers haye already been secured for the cue. The street sprinkler ploughed its way through the dusty thoroughfares yes terday, but the intense heat evaporated the liquid drops as fast as they fell and the people steamed and steamed and steamed. A Sumter county lady sent in yester day a coop of sixty-five fine chickens of the yellow propeller variety, and Buchanan Bros, paid her $10.25 for the lot. It pays to raise chickens for this market. A Thousand Tongues. Could not express the rapture of An nie E. Springer, of 1125 Howard street, Philadelphia, Pa., when she found that Dr. King’s New Discovery for Consump tion had completely cured her of a hacking cough that for many years had made her life a burden. All other rem edies and doctors could give her no help, but she says of this Royal Cure—‘‘it soon removed the pain in my chest and I can now sle» p soundly, something I can scarcely remember doing before.” I feel like sounding its praises through out the Universe.” Ho will every one who tries Dr. King’s New Discovery for any trouble of Throat, Chest or Lungs. Piled up in front of a local drygoods store yesterday were cases of domestics manufactured by the splendid one hundred thousand dollar mill located in the little town of Pelham, Ga., about one-fifth the size of Americus. Around the corner a grocer was opening up oases of canned goods shipped here from the two great canning establish ments at Fort Valley. Thus Pelham clothes us and Fort Valley feeds us. The moral is self evident. Better have a good medicine and not use it than to need it and not haye it. See? Then just before you get hurt, buy a bottle of Dr. Tichenor’s Anti septic. It is a record breaker for Wounds, Burns, Bruises, Scalds, etc., for man and beast. 50c. a bottle at all drug stores. SEABOARD AIR LINE RAILROAD. Another Grand Excursion to Savannah August 13th. Atlanta, Aug. 10.—The state of Geor gia will not have to borrow money this year as oeen the custom for the past two years. NEARLY 500 NAMES LEFT OFF LISTS, Jury Commissioners Complete a Re vision of Box. HUNDREDS OF NAMES DROPPED Because Taxpayers Failed to Make Returns and Therefore Not Quali fied.—Doctors Excused and Preach ers Taken The jury box of Sumter county con tains about 650 names as the result of the revision completed yesterday, and - that number is between 400 and 500 short of the total contained in the box during the past two years and from which grand and travers jurors have been drawn heretofore. The total is about 650 against 1,115 names in the box heretofore. The commissioners, Messrs. J. It. Battle, C. G. Sheppard, J. J. Hanes ley, G. W. Glover and J. F. Bolton, completed their work at noon yester day, drew juries for October court and adjourned. In speaking of the great disparity in the number of old and new names in the jury box, one of the commissioners said yesterday that the names just didn’t appear on the tax books, and as the new list was made up entirely from that record there was no other alterna tive than to leave oil some of the best citizens of the county. The fault, therefore, is their own, aud not that of the commissioners. Hundreds of tax payers failed or re fused to make returns of their property this year, and the names of all of these are left out of the jury box. Then there are citizens who never serve on a jury, though their names have been in the box for years. They usually come forward with a legitimate excuse and are let oil' For this reason the jury commissioners decided to let them off permanently and their names were, therefore, omitted in the recent revision. There was good reason for this, the commissioner thought, as it tended to keep down the professional and omni present talesman, who is always on hand to be “caught on the jury” if an occasion was presented. All the doctors were left off, as they rarely serve on a jury, but the name of every preacher went into the box. Many prominent business men here were left out because they had not made returns of properly, while good men in the country districts went off the lists for the same reason. The names of 508 travers and 142 grand jurors alone went into the jury box this week, the smallest number in years. Your druggist knows a good thing when he sees it. He always keeps Dr. Tichenor’s Antiseptic for sale because it is a good thing. He likes to sell it because it always gives perfect satis faction. REPORT NOT VERY FAVORABLE. Average Condition of Cotton Given by States. The Government report of the con dition of the cotton crop, issued yes terday, is very near the same as at this date in July. The average condition of the crop on August Ist., was 76, as compared with 75 8 on July Ist., 84 for August Ist. 1899, and 91-2 for same date in 1898, The mean average for August for past ten years is 85-3. The impairs ment of conditions this year is due mainly to drought and lack of culti vation, while in some sections contin uous rain has wrought damage to the crop, The average by states is: Vir ginia 72; North Carolina 80; South Carolina 84; Georgia 77; Florida 74; Alabama 67; Mississippi 60; Louisiana 77; Texas 83; Indian Territory 91. The area planted in cotton and abandoned is something less than generally reported. Hot weather saps the vital energy and makes the hardest workers feel lazy.
