After weeks spent in earnest discus sion, relative to the open ditch on Jackson street, which has been de clared a nuisance, the city council last night settled the matter in two minutes. This was by the adoption of a reso lution requiring the city marshal to cut down all undergroth above the ditch, fill up holes in the bottom where water collected, remove any other ob jectionable objects, and charge up the bill of expenses—possibly ss—to peo ple owning property alongside. It was just as easy, and all probably wondered why this happy idea had not suggested itself before. After due felicitation upon the final disposition of the momentous ditch problem, the solons soared higher, even to the top of the water tower, which they decided needed repainting. A winter coat of bright Geronimo red will take the place of the Aguinaldo brown which now ornaments the iron tower. Then council proceeded to get after the Muckalee gondoliers. These are boatmen who anchored their swift gliding feluccas beneath the long bridge near Magnolia dell while angling for mudcats and pollywogs. It was argued that the moving boats greatly disturbed the serenity of the rural mule driven that way, and that serious runaway accidents had narrow ly been averted. Rear Admiral Bill Feagin will dispose of the gondoliers or scuttle the piratical craft if necessary.
