The situation on Galveston island is enough to appeal to the flintiest heart. Many a man carries his total assets on his shirt front in the guise of a dia mond pin. Now York is to have a 30-story build ing. That might do to entertain Li Hung Chang in when he makes his next visit. Ex-President Cleveland will not sit on the international board of arbitra tion. This will make room for two or three others. Edwin Markham has written another volume of verses, in which “The Mau with the Hoe - ’ is rescued from his peri lous position of a few years ago, Murat Halstead has a son who has a fine job under the Administration. Mr. Halstead consequently cannot say too many good thing of McKinley, nor indulge in too enthusiastic predictions for hie success. The Augusta Chronicle makes the pertinent inquiry: “Will the shutting down of the southern cotton mills force down the price of cotton? It is unfortunate if our mills and our farm ers cannot both prosper at the same time.” Fqi the sake of common humanity, it is to be hoped those awful stories from Galveston are exaggerated. The tales ‘ told of the work done by fiends in hu man shajie may well set the world to asking whether civilization is in very truth a failure. % The extra session of the Kentucky Legislature, called to perfect the Goe bel law, has become entangled in the shirtwaist question. Hope has picked up his legislative paraphernalia and departed for the mountains on a visit to the moonshiners. The Republican organs are explain ing Tom Reed’s refusal to vote this vear on the grounds that his vote is no bigger than any other man’s. But let a prominent independent say he is go ing to vote the Republican ticket and it is “worth a million votes.” A New York boy found a negotiable check for 95,000, signed by the Auto- IHR~'le Patents Exploitation Com and when he took it into the ||L p v a ’ J -nven a bright new silver 7 -flk' '1 ■ Ymermrin i■<■<>] le have ■♦/...•-.tfß'n no*- f- r tl.eir liv.; .'i-Li-r- governments on earth at sea as to the Chinese HHe 1 'v only oi.i ; m ' 1 how t o k< •. ; 101 s. -1 a nows it a’.'i has hei Ijl those that him no Übibii.tes will <-o-,ii.’ tor noth- Everybody ought to know that liine out the names oi the nom and substituting others makes no orence with the purpose of the elec- whose names follow. There are three representatives of foreign countries at West Point, ad mitted by the customary courtesy of Government to Government: Cadet Alfaro, the son of the President of Ecuador; Cadet Iglesias, a brother of the President of Costa Rica, and Cadet Ponte, the son of the Venezuelan Sec retary of War, The Republican plurality in Maine is a falling off of 18,000 compared to the vote four years ago. In 1896 the Re publican plurality was 48,000. This time it is 81,000. It is 5,000 better than years ago—an off year—but I'.KX) to is ADVERTISING AND PROSPERITY. There is no better index to the enter prise and prosperity of any town or city than the well-filled advertising columns of its representative newspa per. Wherever there are live mer chants the advertising columns of the newspaper will be filled with live ad vertisements. This is the medium adopted b / merchants to communicate with shoppers, and where merchants have anything to communicate they will employ the newspaper as the best and most reliable medium. And so it happens that live mer chants in advertising themselves also advertise the place in which they live, for the newspaper circulates far and wide, and the outsider may form a fairly good idea of the thrift and en terprise of a city or town by scrutiniz ing the advertising columns of its rep resentative paper. The Times-Record er points with pride to its advertising columns, and invites the attention of its readers to the splendid array of fall trade announce ments the liberal and public spirited merchants of the city are offering the public. Read the Times-Recorder;it is the business index of Americus. CAREER OF THE CANDIDATE. He cometh up like a flower t and re tireth from the race busted. His friends fill him with false hopes and atmosphere. He swelleth like a toad and thinketh the whole world his’n. He smileth upon all mankind and slop peth over with good humor. He kiss eth the children and scattereth the microbes among innocent babes. He cheweth a clove when he meeteth the preacher, and as he converseth with him he standeth seaward and curbeth his breath as with a strong bit. He goeth home late at night to his wife with a beery breath and cold feet. He riseth up betime and goeth forth with out his breakfast, “I go to see a man.” The deadbeat lieth in wait and pulleth his leg to a queen’s taste. He “naileth a lie,” but before the election day comes he runneth short of nails. He giveth liberally to the church. He subscribeth a good sum to the band, contribute!! to the poor man whose barn was burned; he sentheth a small keg hither and a large keg thither ;he yield eth up his substance with apparent alacrity. After the election he goeth back of the barn and kicketh himself and teareth his hair and calleth him self a Rotterdam fool. Governor Candler does not believe that Georgia will gain another con gressman under the new census. He takes the position that the state will have to gain a population of at least 300,000 m order to get an additional representative in congress. Governor Candler is probably correct. During the first four or five years after the taking of the last census, Georgia did not increase in population very rapid ly. For the last few years, however, the population of the state has been increasing quite rapidly. Georgia is now a growing, thriving state. The in crease in her taxable values last year alone amounted to more than eighteen million dollars, and if she does not gain a new congressman this time, she will certainly secure one under the census to be taken ten years hence. CATARRH • Catarrh’ has become such a common disease that a person entirely free from this disgusting complaint is seldom met with. It is customary to speak of Catarrh as nothing more serious than a bad cold, a simple inflammation of the nose and throat. It is, in fact, a complicated and very dangerous disease ; if not at first, it very soon becomes so. The blood is quickly contaminated by the foul secretions, and the poison through the general circulation is carried to all parts of the system. Salves, washes and sprays are unsatis factory and disappointing, because they . do not reach the seat of the trouble. S. S- S. does. It cleanses the blood of the poison and eliminates from the system all catarrhal secretions, and thus cures thor oughly and permanently the worst cases. Mr. P. H. McAllister, of Harrodsburg.
