The high price of cotton is embar rassing some southern cotton mills, which may have to close down in con sequence. The man who sold his cotton crop when he planted it at 8 cents thought he was doing a big business. He is now engaged in computing his losses. When you see a young woman mak ing a fuss over a widower’s children it’s a sign that if she doesn’t soon ac quire a right to correct them it won't be her fault. And now the happy farmer is promis ed a fortune for his cotton seed, as well as his cotton. Already the price has advanced to nearly double that paid for seed last season. Drinking water in Galveston costs Si per pint, condensed milk $2 50 per pint, fresh beef $3.50 per pound, flour 522.50 per barrel, potatoes $0.75 per bushel, and bread 600 per loaf. The sight of a load of little water melons on the streets yesterday caused the mullet market to sag considerably for a time while the colored cotton picker sampled the chill bombs. An exchange remarks that “if young men think the girl shirt waist will dis appear with the coming of cold weather he is mistaken. The flannel shirt waist is all ready for winter wear,” Will Johnson, “born endurin de ’olipse” and dark in consequence, was arrested yesterday by Deputy W. P, McArthur and sent back to Leesburg where he was wanted by the courts. “She talked to let him know she wasn’t afraid of old bachelors.” “Yes.” “And he talked to her just to let her know that he wasn’t afraid of widows.” “Well?” “Oh, they are married now.” Glorious News. Enormous Quantities of Fish Consumed Here. Americus fish dealers disposed of 150 barrels of fish yesterday. An enormous quantity, to be sure, but they went, and before 8:30 o’clock last night a hungry host of Ham’s household howled hoarsely for more, but the howl was in vain. A shipment of two carloads, or 150 barrels, were on hand when the cotton pickers got to town yesterday morning, The onslaught upon the stands was terrific and irresistible. At 8:30 last night it was stated at one of the markets that the entire supply was exhausted. Possibly thirty bar rels were jobbed off in nearby towns, but the balance were sold here. A barrel average 120 fish, so at least 3,600 of the fish were sold in Americus, averaging probably a dime each. SEABOARD TO SETTLE SOONER. Reported That Pay train Will Arrive Monday. The hundreds of employes of the Seaboard System in Americus will get their money earlier this month than last. It was stated yesterday (unof ficially) that the paytrain would arrive here tomorrow, 17th, and pay off for August, Last month payday fell on the 28th, and considerable inconveni ence was caused the employes by the delay in getting their money.
