NEWSOM’S WOUNDS NOT SERIOUS Wade Frazier is Charged With Shoot ing T. S Newsome—Arrested and Gave Bond, After which Warrants Were Issued For Newsome- Wade and Dink Frazier, brothers, who reside in the country ten miles west of Americus, were arrested here yesterday morning, the former charged with the shooting of T. 8. Neweome, while Dink Frazier was charged with carrying a weapon concealed. Both men gave bond and were re leased from custody. Warrants were then issued for T. 8. Newsome, the man who was shot by Frazier, charging him with shooting at another, while one warrant charged malicious mischief. The warrants had not been served upon Newsome late yesterday after noon but probably were served last night. He was shot in the neck, side and thigh with small shot in the re cent difficulty, but bis wounds were not considered serious. The Frazier brothers and Newsome live in the same locality. The cause of the recent difficulty between them is not known but will be brought out at the committal trial. CAN’T COUNT OUR NOSES YET. ( Figures As To Americus’ Population Not Made Known. ] While the larger cities of Georgia ( have received returns of their census j counts others, and among them Ameri cus, are still doing a lot of hopeful ‘ guessing as to their population. < Americus is going to show up very nearly 8,000, missing it perhaps a hun dred only, but the people are anxious to know the exact figures. However, ( Uncle Sam refuses to be hurried, and it may be a week or two, or perhaps longer, before the offic ! al figures are given out by the Census Bureau. Another Kind of Chicken. TO SEND PETITION TO HAY Admiuistration Will Be Urged to Safe guard American interests in China. Southern Manufacturers Are Appre hensive of Russian Aggression. Washington, Nov. 10. Forty-five cotton mill owners in the south, fearing that the recent war will seriously change the trade conditions between this coun try and China, have prepared a petition which they are sending to Secretary of State Hay. They fear that Russia will obtain possession of Manchuria aud will impose such heavy duties on American goods as to render a withdrawal of American interests from that country necessary. They express approval of the open door policy and express the hope that the administration will take such action as it may deem proper to maintain the protection and perpetuity of the existing Commercial relations with China, and especially as regards Manchuria. This petition is signed by 18 mill own ers in North Carolina, 21 iu South Caro lina, four in Alabama, one iu Georgia and one in Maryland. The total capital invested in their mills is $J4,3i»4.500. The total number of looms is 31,039 and total number of spindles is 1,072*054. TEST OF WARNING LIGHTS. Lively Competition Between Ameri can and European Makers. Washington, Nov. 10. Tests are now in progress in this city of storm warning lights to be placed on the new ! signal towers authorized by congress to be established in the principal harbors 1 of the country. A large number of makes of lights have been submitted for 1 adoption and are now under oonsidera , tion. It is planned to test the power of the respective lights from the tower of the postoffice building in this city, if authority ia given by the postal officials. The object aimed at is to increase the carrying capacity of the lights. While the present maximum is about 5 or 6 miles it is hoped to reach a distance of 12 miles at sea with the new oil lamps, and 15 to 18 miles with the electric lights in ordinary weather. Makers of lamps in this city and Eu rope have entered into the competition, which is now closed, for equipping all stations contemplated. The opera house management has advanced the time of opening the doors and raising the curtains a half hour, and hereafter the play will begin at 8 o’clock, the doors opening at 7. The nights are long now, and many pa trons of the theatre think 8:30 o’clock a late hour to begin. So when you come to the play hereafter be in your seat at 8 o’clock and see the first of it. The freeze Friday morning cost the farmers of Sumter county hundreds of dollars in the loss of seed cane. Com ing unexpectedly as it did, the freeze nipped the luxuriant cane fields and what would have been reserved for seed, and next spring’s planting must be obtained elsewhere. About the en tire crop here will have to be boiled up into syrup, leaving none for seed.
