Simons, a bayber, was go mg home froxr work Saturday night he was attacked b/ two negroes, who Clubbed his brainsoul with an iron bar. A farmer who was near the scene was also attacked by the assassin, but escaped and gave the alarm. Suspicion pointed to Bud Row land and Jim Henderson, negroes, the latter having worked for the murdered man. They were arrested and lodged in jail. Sunday morning a dog was placed on the trail of the murderers and after following the trail for some time led the posse to the bed occupied by Rowland. Securing ropes, sledgehammers, etc., and gaining in numbers as it went, the now howling mob repaired to the jail. The sheriff and two deputies at tempted to protect the prisoners, but were disarmed and locked in a room. The sheriff refused to give up the keys, and a telegraph pole was secured and the side wall of the jail battered in. The door to Rowland's cell was broken down with sledges, a poose adjusted. negro was carried to the jail yard, where he made a confession, implicat ing Jim Henderson and another negro. He was then swung up and his body riddled. Returning to the jail Henderson’s cell door was broken down. He was then taken to the jail yafd and hung beside Rowland. The mob then went in search of the other negro, who was a hotel porter. He took refuge on the roof, and before he could be captured the manager had established his innocence. ANOTHER EXCITING DAY Nearly All Leading Stocks Dealt In. Heavy Transactions Recorded. New York, Dec. 17. —The stock mar ket showed all the signs of an excited and rampant bull speculation again to day. This has become so familiar a state of affairs in the last six weeks as to deprive it of much of its novelty and consequently of its interest as a mere spectacle. Every preparation had been made to meet a sweeping outside de mand for stocks. Practically all of the leading stocks were dealt in, individual transactions running up to blocks of 4,000 and 5,000 shares. Blocks of 1,000 shares seem to be the rule rather than the exception. The scene on the floor of the exchange was apparently one of wild disorder, but was in reality one of the highest and most complex organization.
