There’ll be music Here A few store fronts have been decor ated, but as the weather threatens rain just now many merchants will wait until the clouds roll by. Wagon loads of Christmas turkeys were hauled in from the country yes terday, and everybody with the price can have one of the .juicy birds. The county school teachers will get their money today. A check for §2,421 for November salary having been re ceived and placed to their, credit. There was another rush in trade cir cles yesterday. Many lookers aud come-backers thronged the stores, in specting the things they wanted. The firemen are rubbing up the trucks and wagons and preparing to decorate them for the carnival. They will cut a striking figure in the parade. Postmaster Smith says the holiday rush has not struck his force yet. This will come in a few days, however, when the mails will be crowded with Christ mas packages. The goods hauled out of Americus by wagon yesterday would have loaded a freight train. The only merchant who complained of trade was the “dead’’ one who never advertises. Already the colored friend of yore has started the crusade of catching his white acquaintances “krismus gift. This will continue until some time early in February or March. Another matrimonial epidemic is threatened in Americus. R. Next to Ladles’ Entrance Windsor Hotel. MUST ACCEPT DECISION OF BOARD Aud Allow Plant System to Pay Taxes Accordingly. Judge Lumpkin in the superior court, has decided that the State of Georgia must accept the award of a board of arbitrators and allow the Plant System of Railways to pay their taxes accord ing to the sum returned by this board, or about §400,000 less than the original return of the railway officials. This case has attracted considerable atten tion. The Plant System officials re turned the taxes on their trackage in Georgia but the Comptroller-General of the State refused to accept the fig ures and made an assessment himself. To this the railway objected and a board of arbitration, which was appoint ed, returned an assessment lower than that originally submitted by the Plant System, The Comptroller General again objected, but Judge Lumpkin, before whom a writ of mandamus in the matter was argued, ruled against the State. Presides for Judge Littlejohn In a Bank Case. Nothing in the proceedings of Sum ter superior court yesterday morning were of special interest, only one or two cases being disposed of. At the afternoon session Judge E. J. Reagin presided for Judge Littlejohn in the case of the old Bank of Americus, Judge Littlejohn being disqualified. The case is one having in view a dis tribution of the assets of that defunct institution, and will occupy some time in its hearing, As soon as this case is finished today Judge Littlejohn will take up the criminal docket for two or three days. The Americus Minstrels will give a benefit performance at the opera house Friday night, the proceeds going to the Americus Cornet Band. Upon the program appears the names of a num ber of good singers and dancers, to gether with instrumental musical fea tures, and no doubt the boys will well entertain their audience. Selection of Queen of Carnival Will Soon Ee Made. The election of Queen of the Carni val continued a matter of absorbing in terest yesterday, and another big batch of ballots went into the boxes for each of the favorites. There is much specu lation as to who will win the coveted prize and do the social honors of the Christmas Carnival, and the announce ment of the result tonight is awaited with the greatest interest among the friends of the fair contestants. The voting will end promptly at 9 o’clock tonight. The burglar bold with other freaks is coming to the carnival. In fact, he is already here and is proceeding to rum mage rooms wherever he finds an open door. One broke into a residence on Rees Park early yesterday morning, helping himself and getting away un detected. There will be a gang of sneak thieves in Americus for the next two weeks, and Chief Wheeler advises citizens to securely fasten their doors, day and night, as hatracks are the spe cial objects of attack of this class of house raiders. Hotes and Boading House Are Fill ing Up. The advance guard of the carnival crowd arrived yesterday in the persons of a half hundred concessionairs and exhibitors, helpers, etc., and more are on tbe way. Many of the large board ing houses arealready filling up, while the hotels are doing an increased busi ness. Extra provisions are being made, however, and the crowds next week will be taken care of comfortably. In the meanwhile, if you can accommo date a few boarders, inform Capt. FOUND MURDERER IN AMERICUS. Officer Catches a Negro Wanted In Florida. Sheriff John A. Pierce, of Tallahas see, Fla , was in Americus yesterday in quest of a negro wanted in his state upon the charge of murder. The negro had been traced here and Sheriff Pierce, with Deputy heriff E. L. Bell, set out to catch him. Sheriff Bell con cealed himself at the office of the Southern Express Co., learning that the man wanted would come there for a package. He came, and is now en route to Florida wearing bracelets. Special Notice. COUNCILMEN FEAST BEFOREJJEPARTING. Old Council and New Held Session Last Night. MAYOR FELDER AND ALDERMEN Take Prescribed Oath and Assume Charge While Mayor Hixon and Retiring Members Go Out—Royal Feast Participated In It is Mayor John B. Felder and Ai dermen Glover, Fort and Cameron in reality this morning, and for the next two years these gentlemen will assist in shaping the affairs of Americus- Two councils met last night, the old and the new, the former, with Mayor Hixon in the chair, for the purpose of disposing of unfinished business, while the new council, after taking the pre scribed oath, took up the burden of state that had fallen from the shoulders of their very worthy predecessors. The change was effected with the usual ceremony attending. The old council first wound up its af fairs, after which Justice Ansley ad ministered the oath of office to Mayor Felder, and Aidermen G. W. Glover, ’Lynn Fort, and Clerk Davis. Aidermen Cameron was out of the city last night, and will be sworn m on Monday night next. Mayor Hixon and Aidermen J. W. Guerry, A. T. Oliver and 11. D. Watts, the retiring members, then withdrew for a time while the new members, with Aidermen Sherlock, Mitchell and Bol ton, proceeded to business. When all matters had been disposed of members of both the old and new councils, with a number of invited guests, partook of a sumptuous feast of oysters and other good things, pre pared by the firemen and employes at the city hall, and good cheer reigned supreme. It was a superb supper and heartily enjoyed. The new council will meet in regu lar session for the first time on Mon day night next.
