The rubber ball throwers were abroad in force yesterday, and many unweary pedestrians got a pelting from fair feminine hands, You will see a splendid performance at the opera house tonight by the Rob son theatre company. Popular prices; 10c, and 30c. The Ferris wheel was a source of at traction yesterday, divi ling honors with the Hying jenny. Everybody in Americus rides now. The “weiner” man is here, as a mat ter of course, and the aroma of his hot sausage draws the nickel from the rural pocket like a plaster. Nearly 500 people came in on the noon Seaboard tram from the west yesterday, while every train brought in its jiuota of carnival visitors. Several merchants were busy yester day putting up their carnival colors, but there are many yet who have put up no bunting at all. Three hundred negroes were “knock ed down” in the streets here yesterday. The ball throwers did a fine business at three shots for a nickel. Butter, even at 30 cents a pound, is a very scarce article in Americus this week. Usually it is a “strong” attrac tion and quite plentiful. The Abbeville band is one of the best in this part of the] State, and the concerts yesterday and last night were very highly appreciated. The “slide for life” from the top of the water tower, a height of a hundred feet, is indeed thrilling. Be sure to see it at 2 o’clock this p. m, “llecatseni alive” is still in the ring and doing business at the old stand. But some ot the revelers “see snakes” without going tli re. This is Christmas day, and will be the livliest one Americus has ever known. The 'I imes-Recorder wishes one and a 1 a Merry Christmas. Americus is c rtainly in holiday at tire this week, and with the innumer able attractions hear our carnival visi tors wih see much to entertain them. The Christmas tree at the Presbyte rian church last evening was a delight ful occasion, and Santa gave presents to scores of happy and good little Sun day school folks. The Thompson’s made the first high dive yesterday afternoon, jumping from a ladder into a pool a hundred feet below. This is a daily free perform ance and a very good one. The “thtatres”on Lamar street, es pecially those where the dancing girls held forth, vVere magnets of great strength yesterday and attracted the masculine element from both city and country. Senator Rouse, who was shot at Ashmore last Thursday, when Edgar Nims was killed, is not dead. Rouse was brought here Saturday, where he could have proper medical treatment. Hope is entertained for his recovery. The coroner’s jury re turned a verdict of murder in the sec ond degree against Walker and at the preliminary hearing Saturday he was held for manslaughter. WILL REPLY TO CLEVELAND Bryan Will Answer His Criticisms Ol the Democratic Party. Chicago, Dec. 24.—1 t is stated that Hon. Williryn J. Bryan will answer ex- President Cleveland’s criticisms of the Democratic party at the annual banquet of the W. J. Bryan league of Chicagc on the anniversary of the battle of New Orleans Jan. 8. The affair will take place at the Sherman House. It will be Bryan’s first public speech since his sec ond defeat for the presidency. Announcement was made last even ing at the meeting of the county De mocracy by Edward A. Burke of the acceptance by Mr. Bryan of an invita tion to speak ou Jacksou day. Mr. Bryan's subject is ‘‘Democracy.” Besides Mr. Bryan the other speakers who have accepted are ex-Goveruor W. J. Stone of Missouri, Congressman Car mack of Tennessee and Burke Graham of Kentucky. INTERESTING DISCOVERIES Results of Researches of the Mormon Explorers In Mexico. Phenix, A. T., Dec. 24.—Ad vices have been received of antiquarian discoveries made in gQUthern Mexico and Central America, among Mormon explorers. Three months ago the party began a three years’ trip down into South Amer ica for the purpose of searching for traces of the last survivors of the Ne phites, believed by the Mormons to have been the first people of this country. Benjamin Gluff, president of the Brig ham Young academy in Provo, Utah, is iu charge of the expedition aud has 24 students under his charge. In a letter to a friend here Professor Gluff states that many prehistoric ruins eave been examined by the party and evidences unearthed which tend to up hold the Mormon traditions. Two Killed; Two Wounded. London, Ky., Dec. 24.—Two men were killed and two wounded at Friar’s distillery, 12 miles from here yesterday. Four members of the Sizemore family on one side, aud Henry Barrett and W. H. Young on the other, engaged in a fight. Young was killed instantly, the brains of one of the Sizemore’s were shot out and two of the Sizemores were probably fatally wounded. Decatur Furnace Sold. Decatur, Ala., Dec. 24.—The Tut weiler Coal, Coke and Iron company ol Birmingham has purchased from Eu gene Zimmerman of Cincinnati the old Decatur iron furnace located in Deca tur. The Tutweiler company will im mediately begin tearing down the build ings and will remove the machinery tc their plant near Birmingham. Freight Rates Reduced. Pittsburg, Dec. 24.—1 t is announced by the officials of the freight traffic man agers that the railroads leading out of Pittsburg have decided to reduce the rate on coke from the Connellsville re gion 30 cents a ton to Philadelphia and Baltimore aud proportionately to other points ou the eastern seaboard. Having accepted a position with the Bank of Commerce, made vacant by the resignation of Mr. Lott Warren, I am compelled to close out the entire stock of goods of the E. D. .
