OUT FOR A WALK
(By Strickland Gillian.)
My tiny son walks out with me
Along the sweet suburban road—
Mas many a cherry scout with me
While chattering in our own love
code;
He finds a reddened leaf perchance,
A gaudy butterfly’s lost wing,
A stone from which the sun rays
glance.
Or some such childish-cherished
thing.
.All these he bears to me and places
Within my hand (as I have halted
To reconcile our varied paces),
And says with look and tone exalted
"See, Father, what I found back there;
You missed it when you sauntered
Easter Is

♦ MRS. TAFT AN AUTHORESS ♦
“Recollections -of Full Years,” by
MFs. William Howard Taft, tells in
* -Si • v>
nearly four hundred royal octavo pages
some of the things that Mrs. Taft has
seen in her own land, in Europe, Asia,
Panama, Cuba, the Philippines and
elsewhere. As the daughter of a suc
cessful and highly reputable lawyer
in Cincinnati, belonging to a family
well known in the Presbyterian
church, with a tradition of education
and refinement, she knew all that was
most agreeable socially in the city
where Mrs. Trollope established her
bazaar, and whei e she found much ma
terial for her unpleasant book, en
titled, "The Domestic Manners of the
Americans.” "
When little more 'than a girl, Mrs.
Taft first visited the white house when
Rutherford Hayes was its official oc
cupant. Her husband, whom honora
ble office sought and sought again
from youth to middle age, she married
when both were still young. Their
life in Washington began when Mr.
Taft was appointed solicitor-general.
The intimacy of Mr. Roosevelt and
his secretary of war was charming
then as yet no cloud had come be
tween the president and the man
whom he was to designate as his suc
cessor. When Mr. Roosevelt return
ed from Europe in the midst of Mr.
Taft’s term, the two met, according
to Mrs. Taft’s testimony, on the most
cordal footing, and the president was
convinced that his predecessor remain
ed his personal and political friend,
a conviction not quite shared by the
watchful wife. Mrs. Taft permits her
self no bitterness in discussing the
campaign that followed, but if her
husband needs a defender he has found
one in this pleasing volume and its
devoted author. The world loves a
good loser, and in these delightful
pages the big, amiable man who prov
ed a very bad third in 1912 appears in
that character. No man could have
