At Tientsin, China, two heigh bors who had been on the most iu~ timate terms had a litt'e 3pat ard aftetward one o! trem, Mrs, Wang, threatened to commit suicide, Mrs, Feng, upon hearing this threat and fearing lest she should be help less'y implicated should her enemy carry her threat into execution, threw herself into a deep ditch with the inteation of drowning herself Fortunately a country man who was passing by rescued her and took her home, A New Xind of Intemperance. If oneshalf of what the doctors are enying all over the country is true there may soon be a greater need of n temperance reform among the women than there is among the men, Strong drink, however, is not the monster by which the wo men may be enslaved, but a strong and poisonous drug equally baneful in its eflect. Thi¥ drug is antipyrine. The chemical name for it is‘dimethyloxyquimlini,’ but as it is rather long and might not be easily pronounced by ladies who are not orthographical exper s, it has been called simply autipyr ine and appears assuch in the meds feal books. It isa white powder, slizhtly bitter, and soluble in wa ter. Until ahout a year ago it was nrescribed for fevers only, but u‘ French medical college recommends elit for headaches and other pains and disorders, and in this way it has gained its grasp on so many thoughtless and nervous women, In Chicago and many other places it is said that the habit is paining with alarming rapidity, for the women take it for every ill. and eannot believe thut its soothing ef fects can have any evil results un~ til the habit is thoroughly fixed upon them. Iu large doses it has been known to produce complete relaxation and at the same time a lose ot reflex action and death. In moderate or tonic doses it often produces convulsions. Tte effect as a stimulant seems to be very much like that of quinine, and the physs icians say that they do not under stand the hold it getson women.— Buflalo Courier. Nore Girls than Boys. | . The following iuteresting statiss ties have been compiled and are appearing in the press of the Srate: ¥ In Georgia there are 137 coun~ ties, and in all but twenty six of them there are more boys than giris.
