Congressman H. G. Turner's ~organ, the (amiila Clarion, madea teeble effort in its last issue to pre .‘cjlpim; the congressional exmpaign ot 1890, Why the Clarioa shou'd attempt Just at this time 1o distutb;the po litical equilibiium ,of sthe district we know not and carc less. The people throughout thedistrict hove ample time (o mdke two more @ipps sl sfiven elect a congresss gray, afl asithout the advice of the Jrrion iin the meantime. It & not our olject in this arti fleto lecture our contemporary gor this unseeming haste, but to briefly notice some unwarranted -and toolish aesertions contained in it alast iseue. “Notice to wire pullers” is the way the Clarion puts the district on notice th.t no opposition to Mr. Turacr's le-election will be sub itted o by the clan of politicians 40 which the editor of the Clarion Belougs. That heis as much ot a politician as those whom he haws presumed to lecture is proven by _his work . and actions in the cam p-igu of 1886, “the Clirion evidently means and dubs as *‘politiciins and wire pullers” all who dare oppose Mr. Turner, and who do not fall meek ly behind its lead and yell with ir, This abuse is a)so intended for any -eitheen -who may hgve aspiration to succeed Mr. Turner- an vepira. .tion that unfits no man for office and je xzt all times any honest gnd eapuble mau’s nndeninble priv. ilege, The Clarion further says that no “politician - who clainis that le ought to have the office because he’ - needs it” should be promoted from [ -the ranks of a private citizen. We know of nvane who has set upl gneh ridiculous claim, and to man | who would eeek it on that grouml' i meutally qualificd for the posis tion, potaithstanding that the Clarion editor says he would be a a formidable opponent on such an issiie. | * ‘The Clarion man aleo wants “the ! demagouge sent to the rear and not to congress.”™ We have no objec ‘ tions, and would suggest that as al mwvve in that direction that he and | a few others who did so much in : influencing the peaple in a certain i eounty in 1886 be promptly re-l tired. Demagogueg often defeat the-true interest of the people, ‘ Agaiu, the Clarion says that'‘no | mian ¢hould be sent to congrees bes | cause he lives op a certain side of a.creek,” Nc man has ever bevn asked to be sent to congress be cause he lives on this side of the fcreck.” and will not dv so. We can't speak tor the Clarion's side. ‘Should this portion of the district preseut a man for congress in 1860 it will not be because he needs tle office, not because he deserves it, not becnuse he lives on this side of the crcek., and he will not be a deniagogue. We will ineist on pepding him to congress becsuse he is nceded there, and because he is able, prudeut and pa. sriotic —one whose abilitier are hard to match. Yo e Again we repeat with increased -smphafis that Dawson is etill mar. -ehing on and will centinye to rarch on prospering aud-to -pros pezinemeet jealous yei bl A Trade Centre. Now that Dawson will soon have three hanks and a eotton compress, Wik £ B o 7 three mik ronds, our merchants are deter mined to make this the great trade centre of this section. The unpar=lléled advantages of transportation, the large stocks of goods purchased and the small marging of profit all conduce to this end. The people throughout this and adjoining counties have learncd thie fact and the business of the town is increasing rapidly every vear, It isno idle boast when we cluim the preeminence of Dawson merchants both in quality of goods handled and the low prices at wihich they are sold. o addition to all this our mer dhants are ol liging and honest and ulway ® treat their customers with fairnessmnd liberality. ‘ A Word to the Inspectors. Although ‘it is quite lawe in the reason, the News is glad to kiow that the anitary inspectors will, in a few days. begin looking after the condition ot thepremises of the citizens of the town. Some of the alleys in the city are also in a fear ful condition and need the atren— tion of the health -officers just a ittle worse than aay other portion l.of theeity. ‘ :Besides loeking after the preme il3es .of private individuals the [.hm“boifiwrs should turn some of théir -attention to the filth to be ! found in the re.r of the stores. , ‘Our southern eclimate makes such diseases as typhoid, hemor ‘l rhagic and malarial fe\:or highly | prolable unless the sunitary com= | dition of the town is carerully | gunrded. % We would urge the inspectors to do their duty, und do 1t fearless ' 1y atd theroughly. Contract Closed. On Wednesday the Southern cot tenmanufacturers and the Alliance men of Georgiu and South Caro lina met in conference at Augusta on the subject of cotton bagging. The eesult of the eonference was thet cotton bagging thirty-seven inches wide, threc.fourth of a pound to the yard, vas adopted ax a standard. The mill« represented agreed to pay for whatever cotton they consumed convered by cot tov bagging ten ceits per hundred pounde. Mr S. Oden heimer, treasurer of the Lane milla of New Orleavs, and L. Lanier of West Point Ga., closed a contract with the Farmers' Alliauce men of South Carolina and Georg'a to supply the farmers of both States with 4,000« 000 yerds of cotton bagging this summer. The contract amounts to £500,000, Put the Convicts on the Roads. l We are glad to see the proposi ’ tion to put the convicts to work on | the public roads of Georgia advo cated by several of the lending pa- ' pers of the state. That such dis~ | position of the convicts is the most | sengible theory ot the proper solu- | tion of the convict question there l can be no doubt, and it is one that |‘ would not only be popular, but‘f that would result fn great benefit to the state and its people in & fivancial way. By it we would bave greatly improved ro::d-ways‘ and the abolition of the present ob- Jeotionable convict lense system, which by resson of its discussion alone in our legislature has cost the tax payers thousands of dollars. As we have said before the south is the best country on eayth, Georgia is ths bost state in the south and Dawson is the best and moet progressive little city in Georgia, Mormons in Randolph. ‘ Two Mormon elders have invad- | ed Rardolph county, and at | Bethel had l{:e bolduess to ark per- | mission to preach in the chvrch,‘\ which of course was denied themn. A correspondent states that they have departed for other fields \\i(lmutl leaving any signe of their visit exs cept the distribution of tracts of | their creed. ! —_— ! O. Hill and E. L. Rainey were appointed delegates to reprerent Terrell county in the - Road Congress to meet at Atlauta on the '22nd. inst. ‘ That Loan and Buil ‘ing Association Is bound tohe one of the most important factors in the upbuild ing of this city. Near'y four bun. dred shares have Leen taken by our citizens, a large number of whom conteriplate building neat residen ces, This is what Dawson has needed for some time. We cannot have too many houscs; there are vecupants for them as tast as they are built, The population of the town would increasc 25 per cent. in six months it only houses could be hud for the people. Atlanta, Savannah and nearly all of the larger cities of this stute owe a large share of their prosperi ty to these loan compauies und there ecun be no doubt as o how it should be receive? in Daws son. Euncourage the enterprise and in a few mouths the land that is p'anted in corn 1 nd vats within our city liniits will be covercd with pice residences, all filled with new citizens. The plan of the company is very simple and no ome need go into it with his eyes shut. A board of directors will he elected for the Dawson orginizs tion, together with |resident, viee president and other officers. Succcss to the Building aud Loan Association. They Have Bought. The trade hus been closed with Mr. Mills for the lot on which to build the new Methodist cliareh, the price paid being §1,560. This lot 13 on Stenewall street, is ore of the most valuable picces ot proper ty in the city, and is decidedly the most desirable place for a churel. A handsome six oreight thousard dollar church will be erected at an early day togcther with a nice par sonage. THE BAPTISTS GETTING READY. Rev. B. W. Davie, pastor of the Baptist church, informs the NEws that he will hegin soliciting subscriptions in a few days tor the new Baptist church. They hope to be worshipping in a new church before many months, | THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH l is being rapidly pushed to comph~ tion, and tKey expect to hold serv. | ices in it by the middle of next wsnth, I The Ladies Missionary Conference l Will open on Friday night at the Methodist church with a service | ot songs, readings and recitqtious.| A similar service wiil be held on Saturday night.
