We learn that the cannon ball train was again fired Into a few nights ago, but as on severul ocea sions before without any serious results, This shooting takes place just beyond the city limits near some houses.of ill repute. These pistol shots at the trains would do better scervice if pointed in the direction of the owwer of the weapon. A vigilant wateh shou'd be kept on this locality and every eftort made to detect aad ecapture the the perpetrators ofsuch hitherto un heard of and criminal deeds in our usually quiet and orderly city. Our citizens =re justly indignant and appeal to the solicitorsgeperal and grand jurors to bring the vios lators of the law to justice. If the guilty ones can be discovered and their evil deeds brought to lignt by judicial enquirv, we are sure Judge Clarke will visit upon the malefactors the fuli penalty of a violated law. In this connection we would again call attention to the houses of ill-fame that foster such wickeds ness and have such tremendous influence for bad in the community. Attempts have been made to bring the keepers of these houses to juss tice, but they have invariably es caped on some technicality ot the law. This matter should receive ’lhc attention ot the grand jury soon to.be in session. A glance ~at theirnames gives hope that an ceffort will be made to wipe out | these de.s of rottenness, . THE PISTOL DRAWN. | - \ An Encounter Between Senatator Ede wards and Dr. Beldwim, | A speeial from Cuthbert tn.qnn-} day’s Constitution gives the follow- | ingaccount of a difficulty hetween Hon. M. In asecond the Colt's re volver wog caught by Dr. Baldwin with one hand and the other was thrown around the neck ot Mr.Ed« wards, A scuffle ensued, and the combattants fell. Bildwin jerked the pistol trom Edwards, and struck bim, when friends interrups ted and seperated the figshters. It recs the tvo gentlemen had stood SECURITY FOR SOME DEBT on the part of a mutual friend. In the mormng ot last Monday they were discussing its payment when Dr. Baidwin told Mr. Ed wards if he was a gentleman he would pay the debt. “If you mean to insinuate [am no gentle man, you are a liar,” replied Mr. Edwards. At ths Dr. Baldwin struck at him buu they were separ.ted. ' the a'ternoon Mr. Edwards drove up iu his buggy to the Pulaskicor ner, where Dr. Baldwin and Mr. Fulton were talking. Mr Ed wards said: *“Dr Baldwin, I understand you have told it around that you slap ped my face,” “I did say that I brushed you,” replied Baldwin. “It you did you told alie,” and as be said it he drew his pistol and leveled it in the tace of Dr. Baldwin, THEN THE FIGHT OCGURRED. The pistol was not fired, but the fight was a bloody one. The mat~ ter bas been the talk of the town, as both parties are representatives of the most prominent families in this gection of the state, Many gay the end is not yet, and eome hot heads have heen heard to sy one will kill the other before it ends. Dr. Baldwin lives in Cuth bert and Mr. Edwards right near, The two gentlemen were opponents it the last senatorial race, and since then, it is said, they have not been very friendly. Here is the special from Macon: “To-day Chief of Police Kenan received a telegram from the chiet of Griftin asking if a box address ed to Walter O. Sutherland was in the Macon Express office. Licu-~ tenant Wood made inquiry and found the box there. Instructions were then givon to two policen:en to watch the office and arrest any one who came for the box. A man came and got the box, claiming to be Sutherlind, without being ars rested. It seems that Sutherland is in Macan with a companior. He is charged with having blown a safe in astore near Griffin, and rohbed the store of consid :rable stock, and it is thought that some of the stolen goods were in the box which was addressed to Sutherland. “P. L. Satherland, alia W, A., w 8 arrested this evening by De tective Shackelford and carried to Griffin. The box Sutherland ob tained from the express office has uot yet been found.” DISCHARGED. The following trom Mondy’s Telegraph shows that Mr Suther land was badly treated. there he ing no charge whatever aguinst him: “Mr. P. L. Mr. Sutherland was never arrested, but went volunta— rily to Griffin, where Shackelford suid he would have the evidence to convict him.
