The white Christ is in Milledges ville. The black Christ and King Solomon are in cells in the ~county jail at Hinesville, and the [ queen is holding her court to-night in a moonlic cornfield, eix miles from here. KING SOLOMON'S REIGN terminated very abruptly Monday forenoon. He announced to his foliowers that he was going to Hinesville, nearly ten miles distant, and liberate all the prisoners contin ed there on charges of lunacy.— He asked that fifteen of the faith ful be appointed to accompany him and wituess the miracle. “With great pomp aund ceremony, and amidst the wildest excitement, King Solomon and the chosen started out for Hinesville. Ove by cne the faithtful tell away by the wayside, and when the king reach~ ed Hiaesville only five or six fols lowers were leit. The marshal ARREST+D THE WHOLE CROWD, ard locked them up. In two or three hours the news of the ignos minous capture of the king reached camp, and one of the sisters forth with announced that she was the queen of Sheba, and a.so God.— Her assertion-was accepted without | question and she is honored accors | dingly. The camp where the negro es are colleeted is seven miles north east of Walthourville etation, on what i 3 known as the old Walthour homestead place. The palatial residence ot the ol master was burned during the %ar and was never rebuilt: About the site, hotvever, some eight or ten small cabing have been built. There are none but pegroes on the place.— The property has passed into the hands of non-residents, and of late years has been sadly neglected. Its present poverty and abandon mert are a mockery of the old plantation. The part now under cultivation iz peculiarly isolated and well caleulated to nurse and ép courage the KATURAL SUPERSTITION OF THE NE GROTS, and Dupont Bell veeded no remark able powers of mind or body to maintain successfully the role be assumed, The fact that he was insane aided rather than embarrass ed him. ThLen James, an izuorant negro justics of the pauce, was equally successtul in the same character. Shedrick Walthour, another negro, made an excellent i{ing Solomon, and finally a black negress, twenty-eicht years of age, and the mother of cight children, is queen of Sheba and also god.— The pnegroes have erowded into these little eabins until the ecabins will ‘hold no more. Many others have built up fires and are slecjiing by them in t[:e open air. Not less than two huundred and fifty are SLEEPING THERE TOSNIGHT. | men, women and children. Be~| siles this number, fully as many more foliowers live near enough to go bome and divide their time sleeping at home. Others content themselves with an oceasional visit to the queen, as they did the two Christsand Kiszg Solomon before her, and retuse to altogether quit work. About one hundred yards | from the row of cabins are two immense live onk trees, the spread ing branches of which meet and form a sort ofarchway. Under this is still standing a small table, and arranged around the table nukivg acircle some forty feet in l diameter, are numbers of rude! benches, A seat is made by driv-| ing four stakes into the ground| at convenient distances apart, and | placing loosely upon them a| flat plank. That circle, under the | live oak branches, was | THE HOLY GROUND. l The two Chricts and King Solo mon have ail held meetings there, | and there it was that the human ' ‘encrifice was offered. 'l e pieanin nies quit laughing as they pass nearl the holy place. Anirreverent act (in this place, whether by old or‘ ! young, is severely punished. It | will be noticed that the two trees | are covered with Spanish moss, exs) cept on one limb that stretches across the entire width of the ring‘ - some fifteen teet above it. There | i 8 no moss on this, and the lenvesl have been picked off tormake its | appearance tae more bare and black. On that limb ] THE DEVIL SAT | l during all the services. Satan was | Uncle Simon Walthour, a negro . man about sixty-five years of age. ' The meetin, s ars stopped now by a peremptory order from the sheriff [delivere‘gciu persou. - The negroes are still'eongragated, however, and areslaves at the commandof the queen. ; The self-constituted sov» ereign gnsses into a trance every ten or fifteen minutes, and then wakes up (0 teil her disciplesot heav+ enly visions and inspirations. She has entirely discarded her husband and chi{dl‘en. Bhe is the gusst; e to speak, ot Alexander Walthour, a grayshaired negro man who reuts the homestead place from its pres ent owper. She was found there in one of her trance moods this afs ternoon, lyiug upon her back, surs rounded by eight or ten crazy ne groes. THE QUEEN'S HEAD AND BODY were covered with a soiled sheet. She wore a new pair ot men’s socks, wlhite, reaching absut three inches above the ankles. Six inches more of her bare legs were shown between the 86cks and the sheet. The w:*;en abotit the bed were fan ning her majesty with palmetto fans, and adeath like silence pre. vailed in the room. “How's the queen?’ the attend auts were asked. **She be in heaben,” was the sols emn replf'. “How long has she been there?" “Ten 'minutes ” “When do you expect her back?” “When she git through wid God.” “Did you hear Christ preach when he was here?” “Bote of ’em.” “Whotold you that womant was queen?” “She say, an’ God say to her.” “Yes,” put in another womn; “an’ ghe be God, too.”" “Yes, glory!” in a chorus from the othars. “Canft you take that sheet off her face}” " There was some opposition to this, but finally the sheet was thrown fown, exposing the womaun's face. Bbe is dark ginger-cake colored; flat nose, -thick lipped, and venitable type or ignorance— The black {ace was as stolid and immovable as it carveld in stone. Not a musele quivered. For thiv ty minutes ot more a conversation was kept up with the attendants as an exeuse kor WATCHING TIE QUEEN'S TAOE, “Where are the Chnsts that preached to you awhile?" “Ound he 1o jailan’ one be in Mil ledeeville,” ““In jail at Hinosville,” explains ed another. “Why don’t they come back?” “How do you think we know dat?” ‘‘Are you going to have any ihre preaching?” 8./t “Then whatare you all staying bere for?” “We go whenshe says go.” “Day have us'rested like Christ, an’ send us away.” Several were asked where they came from. Ore or two came trom South Carolina, forty miles away, but most of them frem with in three miles of the camp. The entire number belong to the Con gregational church, and a few to the Baptist and Methodist, For thirty minutes at least THE QUKEN’S FACE HADN'T MOVED 80 much as the width ot a hair Her attendants were by no means impatient, but watched with awes stricken faces for the return of rea -B§oo, “She up in heaven now,” whis pered one woman to another. “Dar she be,” was the reply. ‘‘Dat woman shooly be queer.” Outside the shanty in W?li(?h the | queen was lying was the main group of apostles. Tt was sup. per time and ten or twelve potfl‘ weie boiling and little picaninnics ‘ were gathering green roasting ears to cook in the dire, Some hominy ard some soup with alittle corn bread made up the general supper. Old Alex \Vas’thour has given his last piece of meat to the disciples, and the negroes have nothing to eat except what they can gather from the fields around them. Undoub:s edly the main body of followers is smaller than it bas' been since Bell left and it is steadily failing away. They are out of provisions and not half of th>m are sheltered, The queen’s posiiion is a comparatively veutral one, and the craze may gradually subside and disappear without further outbreak. But again they may not. All they want is a leader, and that leader may. SUDDENLY ARRISE IN THEIR MIDST. There is no fear that the white l settlers. will be attacked. The icheit auxiety i 3 for the future of the negroes themselves. The ter. ! pentine season is about half over ~and the rice field are needing atten tion, This is the workman’s sea gon, and time lost can not be res | placed. Winter is coming, and five bundred negroes in Liberty county have made absclutely ro provision for it, | The queen’s name is Eila -Rob erts. [. En route to the object sought we passed the old plantation of the r Wards, who in ante-bellum days owned thousands of acres ot {hose rich lime lands and lived in placés in keeping with their wealth. Then we passed the old Sam Grier plan tation, which before the war was one of the richest in the state, and ‘the elegzant mansion built in rich pattern of his day was known for Ite beauty and elegance outside of Georgia.
