Goveryor ‘Davy’ Hivy, of New York, has heen advertised as one #* the attractions of the ;Piedmont shor. Mfiffi;r a town to have a publie school system. Daw #on is a big town and wants big en. torprises, TaE bill to create a new road 1 Jaw for the State, recommended by the road congiess, has met ite death in the house. | MRe. BiLrie GLesy,of Whitfield, is busily engaxed on a dueling bill. Make at strong, Billie; Georgia must ‘put a stop to this outrage cn “her fair name. THE Atlanta Journal has perpes trated the most ridiculous joke of the sea<on by suggesting Sneleon as a candidats for gdvernor, Great man that fellow Snelson, A BoRT of armistice is pending in the Huff-Patterson afluir. They have submitted therr differences to & committee of twenty-one promis nent citizens ot Macon. Tuae Georgia legiclature has passed a dozen or more bills author izing the establishment of public school systems in towns of the state. “The demand for such laws is a d:- rect protest egainst further state aid to the cause of “higher educa stion.” A cABLEGRAM from London -says that it is expected that cotton will go as high as seven pencc in “October. This would be fourtesn cents per pound and would pay ‘the farmer for holding his crop, ‘but such reports ave generally ‘speculative. Mr. Fevrox, of Bartow, ana ‘Mr. Humpbhries, of Brooks, have been calling each other a liar in the house. These little fellows can't cope with the “Sage of Bartow” in debate, and when he turns his hatteries on them they always lose their temper and say something ugly. - : IT is publicly charged that the revenue officials are in collusion with eriminals in Cowetaand Heard eounties, and as a result a large number of warrants have been sworn out against iunocent citizens, eynrzing them with illicit digtilling, This practice wins money for the officials and justly damnis the ins ternal revenue system. A pisearcn from the city of Mexico says: Messrs. Ellis and Ferguson have come here in the interest of their scheme of bring ing negroes from the Sovthern stetes to Mexico. They have thus far received no encouragement, either from the authorities or from private individuals. W EILE our laws exclude laher ers from foreign countries coming to work in this country, they freely admit Anarchists, Mormons and other mischievous and discordant ple. One hundred and fiftys mr Mormons arrived at New York from Europe one dav last week and at once proceeded to Utah. Privus JoNES says that he coes not want any more of Sne.son's sseolly-fexing.” We have looked over tens of dictionaries, waded throngh Webster’s unabridged, gcampered through the pages of al} the enclyclopedias, but we'll be hanged if that curious word can be found. - It must have been boen in Baker county ina legislative was termelon,— Montezuma Record, SExaToR Brapwerr's bill to extend the public school term six months is a good one. Tt provides that on and after the year 1890 the term of the common sehools shall consist of six months. The coun tw boards of education of each coun. @l have authority to deters avhat mouths of the year the senools ghall be taucht, and all the “Behools ghall be closed un or before December 15th, Let Them Go. The National Assceiation of Col ored Baptists, which was 1n scssion «t Indianapolis a few days ago, went into the wholesale resolution business. They passed resolutions toundemnine the Baxley, Gu., trouble which were tendered the president in person. Tha next resolution was to ask the president to take steps to punish the whites who ejected the parsons from the train, and to give the southern negro protection. The most im portaut resolution was to memori alize congress for an appropriation ot fifty million dollars to enable ‘the negroes to leave the south and .sottle where they will be safe {rom ‘southern lawlessness. i Whenever there is trouble with the negroes in the south it is gens l crally the case, a 3 it wasat Baxley, that they have attempted to thrust themselves where they did not be long, and every attempt at social ’cql‘,fl’&{y.,iu_.t,he, gouth will always be repulsed.. The whites and blacks in the south get along re markably well togzetber, and when there is any disturbance among the races somebody has gotten in the wrong pew, which is not countes nanced by the best people white or black. The whites and blacks in the south will get along well together it they are let alene and each stay in their respective place. Howev~ er,ifthe blacks want to emigratein a body we will utter naught against the government aiding them. Don't Treat. It is eaid that the auti-tr-ating societies formed in New York about a year ago, have already pro~ duced much practical good for temperance. Why cannot these organizations be extended quite generally throughout the country? The drinking habit, says the Jackson News, is quite generally aequired through our vicivusly absurd methods of “‘treating.” Tt it were not a condition of our social code to make drinking a part of the convivial amenities of life, most men would never think of drinking strong whisky and old rum apy more than thyy would think of drinking kerosene or eod !liver oil. To ask » young man to take adrink of whiskey whose ‘stomach had not been demoralized to the whiskey standard, is abeut equivalent to asking him to take a social glass of beuzine. Any man’s stomach will in time learn to ac commodate itself to strange visis tore. Mithridates trained himself 0 eat poison, and there are plenty }of men in the country to-day who ’publicly dine, in the dime muse -3 umg, o a dinver of window ¢l ss and lamp chimueys. But in ors der to do this they must educate their stomachs, and this is precisely ‘what the habitual whisky drinker does, Such Is Anarchy. A few days ago a rough, poorly ‘ clad old German inveuter named Deyhle walked into the office ot a German jeweler in New York, named Gesswein, and drawinz a revolver demanded five hundred dollars or blood. Gesswein very naturally declined to put with so much wealth, and Deyble fired on him, sending a bullet through his heart and killing Lhim almost s stantly. At a iz anarchist meet ing, held iu Chicago, resolutions were passed esmmending the act of Deyhle and declaring that the kills ing was “‘vot murder, but poetic retribution.” One speaker declar. ed that such is the only chance the poor have ot getting even with the rich. For a poor man to kill the rich they scem to think is no harm. Thisis a fair sample of the clasg of immigraticn that Europe has been pouring into America for several vears. We can lessen the evil by closing ovr ports to the slum of the Old World, and the sooner we do it the better, e a L ToE Georgia farmers and news paper men who went to Olio speak in high terms of the energy and enterpiise of the Ohio farmers, and of the productiveness of the soil, but at the same time they declare that the natural advantages of Georgia ure superior to those of thai state. Atter all, Georgia is the empire state and Terrell is the best county in Georgia, WBEN it comes to any move ment having tor its object the ad vancement of the interests of Daw gon and Terrell county, you may count the News in without cop su.ting the editor, LETTER FRGM DR. RENURICK. Four Local Bills Passed For Us---Wily Not b 2 & Condicate For Senator. Eprror News: Somethine over one thousand bills have heen intro duced in the House. Ahout four huvdred, mostly bil's of a local na« ture, have been passed. Abhout two hundred are now on the calens dar ready for action. Quite a large number of them are general in their nature and are of considers able iwportance. New bills are yeu betng introduecd every dov ~ ‘l'he senate has ot a 8 yet taken any acti n en the House Lill to lense the W. & A.R. R., =0 you can sce that the chances are not very good for an early adjourument, Lut a 8 the committecs are near enough up with their work to ada mit of two zessions daily it is to be expected that we will make wiore rapid progress. The Lill that was asked for by the Road Congress, and waa gotten up by a comnittee on roxds and bridees, was defeated in the House on ueeount ot the direet.tax it pros posed 6 levy. The Lill for the cs tal lishment of an industrial school for the white girls of this state met with pretty general tavor, but ou accorrt of the depleted condi tion ot the state’s fiaance reccived only 86 votes, lackin only two votes ol a eonstitutional majority. The proposition to extend the charter o the Marietta and North Georgia Rgilroad to Atlapta, I think, shoyld ard will fail. This road was partly built by state aid vith the express understanding that it was to bea feeder to the state road, and upon the assertion that it would develop the resources of the mountain country, enhance the value of lands and increase the taxes of the state and would be a goad investmeut to the state. Now they want to parallel the state road from Maretta to Atlauta, a distance of twenty miles, thereby seriously damagving it. Since coming here I have intros duced four bills, viz: To incors porate the town of Parrot, court house bill tor Terrell county, schaool W)l for Dawson, and bill to incorporate the Georgia Pharma ceutical Aessociation, all of which huve pussed the House. I want to say that the sugoes tion of my name, by a correspond.- cut, in your last issue for the next Scnator, was without my knowl edge or coneent, and does not meet with my approbation: W. C. KENDRICK. A Big Rattler. A few days ago while returning home Mr. Jesse Wall killed a big rattlesnake by the side of the road near his residenca.
