New York, April' 21.—The minds of
speculators seemed to be still befog
ged to-day over the vista of new de
velopments in the Northern Securities
contest, and the consequence was that,
for the most part, they refrained from
operating. The stock market was -al
most entirely one of specialties, and
the peculiar grounds on which this
class of securities usually moves were
not always manifest.
The market started upwards, led by
Union Pacific, which seemed to be
helped by the granting of a temporary
injunction by a New Jersey court
against carrying into effect the plan
of distribution of Northern Securities
assets. The majority vote by the
Northern Securities stockholders in
favor of the plan seemed to
check the advance in Union
Pacific, but it held its firm tone
on the ground that the delay in the
execution of the plan of distribution
will be a time available for negotia
tion and for arriving at a possible
settlement.
Steel Moved Up.
Owing to the firmness of Union Pa
cific, and the recovery of United States
Steel preferred, the sympathetic in
fluences were in favor of higher prices
in the otherwise semi-stagnant mar-

Steel preferred, which received the
most recognition was the Agreement
amongst ore producers to reduce prices
and to seek further to secure agree
ment to limit output. The coalers were
the subject of a demonstration which
carried them to a higher level, the high
priced members of the group notably
so.
To-day's demand was said to be due
to a very active demand for Anthra
cite, which has followed the spring re
duction in prices.
There wAs some talk of crop damage
from the cold wave, but the rise in
temperature to-day was accepted as
a promise of better things. For the
day of a dividend declaration, Amalga
mated Copper was unprecedentedly
dull and sluggish. The stock lost V
on the day, with the maintenance or
the existing dividend rate. The re
duction in the discount rate of the
Bank of England was practically ig
nored, as the plethoric condition of the
money markets in all the great cen
ters deprived the news of Interest.
Call money loaned here as low as 1
per cent., and time loans for all periods
showed a continued softness of tone,
the stock market closed irregular and
below the best.

past understanding. To get an anti
dote for his perennial incursions has
been the search of all explorers. I had
It from an old trapper and gator hunt
er, Pat Holden, ivho makes a living at
the business on the Oclocknee river, a
few miles from Sopchoppy.
"You can drive them out with a rat
tlensnake," he said. So John Alltgood
and the writer sought out his snake
ship in the blackjack swamp not far
from Oarrabelle. Our first hunt re
sulted In a nine-foot rattler, with sev
en rattles and a button, indicating his
age at ten years or more. This we
brought home, and after carefully
skinning, I dragged the snake about
our home, leaving his mark on the
white sand. The fleas at once left the
place, the remedy proving so efficacious
that with one more snake, seven feet
in length, I have succeeded in clearing
the place of every flea. The bodies of
the snakes are buried fifty feet from
the house and the fleas refuse to cross
the dead line.
