New York, May 3.—The early stock market to-day showed some disposition to continue the downward movement which was in force yesterday. The check to the decline had the apparance of a contest waged between opposing factors in the market and the upward movement was discontinued as soon as the selling was checked. The operators for a decline seemed to center their selling on United States Steel preferred, while the supporters of the market rallied their efforts upon Vnion Pacific. Neither movement was explained by any news of the day and, so far as regarded those two stocks, seemed to be prompted wholly by the purpose to influence the general market. The general movement was extremely sluggish and narrow. The resumption of trading in London after the holiday with no evidence of weak ness by reason of the military events in Asia was a reassuring factor and there was some buying here from London account. The showing had a strong reflect effect upon United States Steel preferred owing to the large part played by steel tonnage Inf the traffic of that system. Pennsylvania stock itself was little affected. The denials of yesterday’s rumors of intended proceedings against the anthracite combination relieved the coalers from some pressure and helped to the recovery. The early market was in consequence of these conflicting factors, very mixed and irregular and rather more active than the recent average. Call Money Firm. Call money showed a firmer tone early for the first time in many days and the minimum rate was 114 per cent with loans made above that. This was attributed to the growing in fluence of the gold exports and to the exigencies of the bidders for the $37, 000,000 New York city bond issue. After the bids were announced call money broke to one half of one per cent The time money market was not affected. The market closed dull and irregular and showed small net changes. Bonds were irregular. Total sales par value $1,825,000. United States 2's the 3's coupon and the old 4's declined (4 and the new 4’s 14 per cent on call. The Cotton Exchange will omit the 10:30 a. m. and 4 p. m. quotations, be ginning to-day, until Sept 1. Washington reports that the unsea sonable cool weather generally throughout the cotton belt has been un favorable for germination and growth and that poor stands are extensively reported in the central ‘and eastern dis tricts, where the drought is also prov ing injurious. Mr. J. Lathrop Morehead has made application for membership in the local Cotton Exchange. The election will be held, May 9. Graybeard. Reference —Mercantile Agencies. BAD WEATHER FOR CROPS IN GEORGIA Cotton Slow and Replanting Necessary All Over the State. Atlant'a, May 3.—Cotton in Georgia is having a hard time getting a start. The dry and cold weather is unfavor able and there is an indication that re planting will be necess'ary in many parts of the state. The other crops, except fruit, are backward. Section Di rector J. B. Marbury, in his report of weather and crop conditions through out the state for the week ending May 2, issued to-day, says: "The week has been an unfavorable one for crops, the prevailing drought and unseasonably low temperature be ing very detrimental to growth as well as to germination of late planted fields. The precipitation for the week w*as very light—practically none occurred in numerous middle and southern sec tions. Cotton planting is nearing com pletion in the north: germination poor; much replanting indicated; replanting is active elsewhere with unsatisfactory results; seed scarce. Stands of e>arly planted cotton are generally poor; many plants are dying; chopping con tinues in the south. Corn is germina ting slowly In the north and growing slowly elsewhere; plants are yellow. Melons are late and Inferior. Cats are heading in the south, but need rain to insure a good crop. The fruit outlook continues excellent in the majority of counties.” The reports from fourteen counties in the northern section of the state showed dry, cold and windy weather, with resultant damage to all crops, ex cept wheat and oats. The reports from the southern and middle sections of the state, by counties, are: Southern Section. Appling—Weather cool and windy, no rain during the week; replanted corn and cotton failing to germinate; oats heading. Brooks—Growth of crops retarded by cool, dry weather; cotton planting completed, chopping well advanced, plants small for the season; melons late; fall oats fair to good. Clay—Cold, windy and very dry; cotton dying in many fields, poor stands of late plantings; corn yellow; fall oats seriously injured by dry weather, spring sowings very poor. Coffee-—Cool, windy week, light, scattered showers on 26th; planting and replanting about completed; grass and weeds under control; many cotton plants dying. Colquitt—Cool weather detrimental to growth; rain much needed; poor stands of late planted cotton; corn fair. Decatur—Dry and cool weather has had a bad effect on crops; poor stands of cotton, much not up; fair stands of corn, but plants are yellow. Dooly—Weather unfavorable to growth of crops; chopping of early planted cotton in progress, late plant ings not up; all crops need rain, though corn is not suffering greatly. Early—Light shofters on the 26th, temperature unseasonably low; late plantings of cotton do not germinate. Irwin—Notwithstanding the cool, dry weather corn looks well, but stands of cotton are inferior, much replant ing of latter will be done; oats suf fering for rain. Lee—Continued dry, cool weather retards growth of all crops, but corn looks fairly well; much replanting of cotton, plants in many fields not up; pears blighted. Liberty—Weather cool, windy and very dry; cotton plants dying; poor stands of corn; pastures falling. Mclntosh—Rice is doing well, but all other crops are in nded of rain and warmth. Mitchell—Cool weather is Injuring young cotton and late plantings are not coming up, chopping progressing rapidly; corn receiving second culti vation; fruit crop promising. Randolph—Weather cool and dry, though light showers occurred on the 26th; poor stands of cotton, large part of the. crop not up; corn small and yellow; rain badly needed. Sumter—Another dry, cool week; cot ton situation poor, not more than one half of the crop up, replanting In pro gress; corn being Injured by cut worms. Terrell —Weather continues unfavor able for crops, though fairly good stands of cotton have been secured, chopping pushed; fruit fine; corn yel low from cool winds. Thomas—Cotton chopping continues; corn small: oats heading; cane and minor crops doing very well. Wayne—Very dry week with cool winds; crops at a standstill; cut worms injuring corn; oats failing. Wilcox—Dry, cool and windy week, unfavorable to crops, though corn Is doing fairly well; growth of cotton checked, many plants not up; wheat and oats suffering for rain. Middle Section. Washington, May 3.—The weather bureau’s weekly summary of cotton and tobacco crop conditions is as fol lows: Unseasonable cool weather general ly throughout the cotton belt is un favorable for germination and growth of cotton and poor stands are exten sively reported, especially In the cen tral and Eastern districts, where drought is also proving injurious. Planting is nearly finished, except in the northern portion of the belt and In the extreme western cotton counties of 'i'exas, in which state the stands'"k're generally good. Chopping Is 11 in general progress over the south ern portion and cultivation has begun in Louisiana and Texas.
