THE COPPER ERA, CLIFTON, ARIZ., JUNE 1, 1899. 7 Neil Munro'a ''John Splendid." In a late publication of the Bookman', the leading journal of criticism of Great Britain, appears a symposium on Neil Munro'8 last novel "John Splendid." Mr. Munro is a cousin to Neil Mun ro, connected with the mechanical de partment of the A. C. Cc's plant in Clif ton, who, like his illustrious relative, is a Gaelic scholar, reading and speaking the language fluently. "John Splendid" is criticised as the truest and finest High land romance writer since Scott. Scot land itself offers to the novelist one of the greatest fields' for romantic literature. IU beautiful scenery, unsurpassed, wherein is pictured mountains and lakes whose narrowed waters reflect the lovely foiliage growing on its banks, the charm of the tourist, the theme for the poet and nature's home for the painter. The topographical -character of every country has its corresponding action up on the people inhabiting it, hence we find not only Scotch people rugged and fitrong physically but withal combining within them the gentler love of poetry, art and literature, besides possessing great qualities of mind that have placed them in the foremost rank if not at the head of the people of Europe. The very names that distinguish the diflareit clans and individuals possess a poetical beauty McGregor, Adair, McPheison, Colin, Campbell, etc. that portrays to the hearer the character of the people ; while the names of Scott and Burns will find a lodgment in the hearts ot genera tions yet to C-ima. From their literature have tht) themes of the greatest operatic music been written German, Italian and French Donnizfttte'a "Lucia," Boi len's "La Dame Blaache," and Mendel sohn's "Odes to the Hebrides," white the beautiful songs of Scotland are un surpassed in their sweetness and sim plicity. Who has not set enraptured while listening to "Robin Adtir, Within a Mde of Edinburgh Town," and the loveliest of all, "Down the Burn Davy Lad." England's pride, hor gardens, owe their beauty and perfection to Scotch heads and handB. In America, the de scendants of the Scots have taken fir.st rank in all the various callings, whether it be literature, b imness, r in the me chanic arts. The Era would advise its readers who love the grand, romantic 'school of Scotch novel writing, to read John Splendid, as they . ill find a' store of pleasure awaiting them which will richly repay them. The book has had an enormous circulation troughout Great Britain and the United States. Street Sprinkler for Clifton. The A. C. Co. has ordered a 600-gallon street sprinkler which will be here about the lOih uf June. It will be paid for by subscriptions, and already the sum has reached 4250, the price for the sprinkler being $425 laid down. The Era stated about three weeks ago that the question of a street eprinkler was being agitated, and now the news will be pleasing to all tae citizens of Clifton without regard to race, eex or color. It moreover be comes a great necessity on account of the streets being formed from or covered with concentrates from the leach works, and when it becomes dry, dust and copper accumulate, which is both disagreeable und detrimental to the health.
