What Happened to the Man Who
Borrowed a Paper to Read-
Did you ever hear of the man
who was too economical to take his
home paper, but sent his little boy
to borrow the copy taken by a
neighbor? In his haste the boy
run over a two-dollar stand of bees
and in . ten seconds looked like a
warty summer squash. His cries
reached his father who ran to his
resue and failed to notice the barb
ed wire fence down, cutting a hand
ful of fish bait out of his anatomy
and ruining a four-dollar pair of
boots. The old cow took advant
age of the gap in the fence, got out
and ate forty cents worth of alfalfa
and died of bloat. Hearing the
racktt the wife ran out, upset a
four-gallon churn of cream in a
basket of kittens and drowned the
whole mes. In the hurry she
dropped and broke a seven-dollar
set of false teeth. The baby being
left alone crawled through the
cream and into the parlor, ruining
a new carpet. During the excite
ment the oldest daughter ran away
with a book agent, the dog broke
up eleven setting hens and all the
calves got out and chewed the
sleevss off of four fine shirts which
hung on the line. Ex.
A cowboy who stopped over night
at the San Agustine hotel, in Tuc
son, was describing the interest
ing features of the hotel, which had
been previously the old Catholic
cathedral. "Everything was per
fect," said he, "with the exception
of one thing. They- kept the light
burning all night in my bed-room,
a thing I ain't used to." "Well,"
said one of the spectators, "why
didn't you blow it out?" "How
could ? The blessed thing was
in a bottle !''
Aluminum as a Conductor.
Aluminum is to have an impor
tant trial as a commercial conduct
or of electricity on the Northwest
ern elevated railroad. Twenty
miles of inch and a half cables are
to be strung to convey the motive
power to the trolley rails. Alumi
num displaces copper on the new
road because of its cheapness. Cop
per almost doubled in price within
a twelvemonth, while the lighter
metal has dropped a shade in the
scale. James R. Chapman, the
electrial engineer in charge of the
new road, says : "After copper, al
uminum is far the best conductor
among the cheaper metals. An
aluminum wire has the additional
advantages of being lighter to han
dle and of beingnon-corrosive."
According to Mr. Chapman, a per
fect joint has been made possible
by a solder invented by a Chicago
man. Chicago Record.
Inspector C. S. Ford informs the
Win8low Mail that there have been
19,687 head of cattle shipped from
that section this fall. Holbrook
has shipped 12,682 head, VVinslow
6,015, Navajo about 1,000.
