THE POLL TAX.
It Must be Paid Before a Citizen is
Entitled to Vote.
The following is the law passed by the
twentieth legislature of Arizona requir
ing the payment of poll tax by the citi
zens of Arizona before they can register
and thereby become entitled to vote :
Section 1. No recorder, justice ef the
peace, or other officer authorized to reg
ister electors in any of the counties in
the territory of Arizona, shall register or
take the affidavit for the purpose of reg
istration of any elector within this terri
tory, unless such person desiring to be
registered shall producá and exhibit to
the registering officer a receipt showing
that he has paid a poll tax for the year
in which he is registering.
Sec. 2. This act shall not apply to
any person who is by ' law exempt from
the payment of a poll tax.' But in this
event, the person desiring to register
must make affidavit to the facts that en
title him under the law to an .exemption
from the payment of a poll tax .
Sec. 3. Any of the registering officers
enumerated in section 1 of this act, or
any that hereafter may be qualified to
register electors', who enters the name of
any person upon the great register of the
county in which he is an officer, without
requiring the person seeking to be regis
tered, to exhibit a poll tax receipt for the
year in which he is being registered, or
taking the affidavit ef such person show
ing he is exempt from the payment of a
poll tax, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor
and subject to a fine npon conyiction
therefor, of not more than $100 or im
prisonment in the county jail not less
than sixty days, or by both such fine and
imprisonment."
