This week wo start n new serial, ''Storm Country Polly," try Grace Hiller White. This Is a ro mance, and the book has sold to the extent of a million copies. It ha* to do With a settlement of squatters Supposed Vo be on the shore of Cake Cayuga, a few miles from Ithaca, N, Y. In this squalid environment the author has located sow® rare and pleasing typen and some remarkable heroines. All readers will Ukè this story hut It has an especial attract ion for the feminine sex. , THE DEVII, WAB THERE. O. K, Knutson, $f Meridian, hands us a copy of the Story City, Iowa. Herald, of Jan. 1», from which wo clip the following? The Devil Was There, (Fergus Falts, Minn., Journal) Th#' following letter was received by Mrs. C. L. Bartlett In answer to a kilter written by her to Hutchinson asking the particulars about the devil at Lake Marion: Hutchinson, Minn. Nov. 16, 1621, Mrs. C. L. Bartlett, Bertha, Minn., Dear Madam: Your Inquiry about the Hutohihsbn 'Devil" cam® to hand and I willingly tell you all I know about It. Of course much that we hear about It Is not dependable at all. What Is fact Is about as follows: l-akc Marion nine miles from here ■ is a pretty resort and a pavilion has tspen built there by the hotel for dan cing. On Sunday for some time back dances have been held and u class of people for many miles around who attend Sunday affairs have attended. It has been said that these dances are rough and that some of the danc ers or both sexes get drunk; that the rooms of the hotel are all en gaged In advance, uud that the cot tage» are brokeu Into and the rooms occupied by the révélera. On Sunday night, Octoi«er 30, last u dance wus In progress there and It ia generally agreed that there were 100 dancers on ibe floor, when the devil came and was In their midst. Home claim that he came up thru the floor, other» that he came dowu thru the roof. He was the regular fel low, they say, horns, hoofs, and tall. Th« lights flared, the mustclai Instru ments flew from the hands of the players and were splintered. Lurid lights filled the place and the devil danced among them. Womeu and girls screamed and some fainted. One or more are still confined in bed with hysteria. They alt fled terror stricken from the place. Home hid lu the woods all night, others found shelter at fafbi houses, *6 cars were left standing by the pavilion until day light came and the party rallied and kept their courage up by keeping close together and got, the curs away. Many and varied stories, are told about the details, but the'above Is generdlly told by all. U It was a hoax; 4 wa * cleverly done and the perpetrators are keeping still. The proprietor ha« offered 11,000 for an explanation of it. HU pluoe. hotel and all U deserted and abandoned, lie nor his family dare not remain there If It was the real devil, he ha* hurt hta owu business, for dancing among that class ha» ceased. It has been a real sensation and 1 suppose has been widely advertised The hardest peo ples to convince that It was a hoax arc those who were there. Yoiirt^Verr sincerely. A. L. Hlchardsou."
