BBS gtauttiitt gilUtta. It a M. PATHS, . . • • Etnas in PaotsatfOA. S Batomday Morhino, June 16,1888. ELMORE COUNTY. laSi After the smoke of the election of 1888 had cleared away and the prena n t officers of Alturas county were found to have been choeen, the moat natural thing calculated to engage the minds of the successful «ms was the matter of fees and sal aries; and when the proposition to grade the counties of the territory into classes, and graduate the emoluments proportionately, had been successful, a hornet's nest was found to have been stirred up, which aroused the energies of the newly elected, whom nothing but first class drippings from the treas ury could make happy. Fully im pressed and wild with apprehension in relation to the importance of the matters involved the court-house ring posted off to Boise City in hot haste, where securing the distin guished services of General D. P. B. Pride, they commenced a vigorous war against any division of the county. The question with these msn was not as to any advantage to be gained by the people or any detriment that might accrue. Ko discussion of this nature formed a part of their reasoning. Their mo matter v ! i In the ear It Uvea were purely personal of dimes and dollars to themselves. Bulldozing upon the one hand and flattery and promises of preferment upon the other, were the means un sparringly used to accomplish their objects. Thus, some prominent citizens of Ada having ventured to express an opinion favorable to di vision because of its palpable jus tice, threats were made of throwing the weight of the influence of Al turas in the scale for the segrega tion of the northern counties and * the annexation of the south to Ne vada. Congressional honors were freely hinted at as the reward of othen who should assist in preserv ing these salaries, and it has been believed others were corrupted. Thus the game went on until a measure possessing within itself as much of equity as any ever in troduced into the legislature suffered defeat. Will this course be repeated? We should take very good care to aee that it is not. The first move ment should be to effect a political combination which should make auch a cause impossible by causing the entire influence of Western Al turas as well as its friends in other parts of the county to become cen tered against any and all candidates who oppose division. And why not thus combine? We cannot in any manner effect the national is sues. We have no vote for presi dent and have no more to say with regard to such issues than the in habitants of the Sandwich Islands. Our delegate in Congress is a mere agent, and cannot vote or speak upon any of the national issues in the house and we have no represen tative in the senate. Shall we talk and vote upon issues which do not exist for us and which we cannot effect and allow our own internste to suffer because we heed them not? Our enemies will endeavor by every possible means to arouse in the minds of (he people a party spirit that can avail them nothing, and they then hope to put off the day for division. We warn our readers of proposed Elmore county that in following either the Republican or Democratic parties at the next election, for Represetative in the Legislature, they are ox changing the substance for the shadow—that they are persuing an M igneus fatuus" leading them far away from home, over swamp and bill and dale. Until we can obtain our new county and something like a seat of justice, where our constantly increasing business may be attended to within a reasonable distance of our koines, we should have but one aim and puroose in politics and that aim ana purpose-division. " There is no reason on earth why we should cast our votes for men who are only in tent upon oppressing us and deny ing ns the most commonly accorded rights of men. It was understood that when the bill for the creation of Elmore county was introduced at the last session of the legislature and under consid eration, that Hon. Fred T.l Dubois was opposing our interests. He may nevertheless introduce a bill in CoogreM, and have the same re ferred, so aa to be ready for action after the summer recess. Dubois professes to introduce all bills his •onstituenta may desire that are cent to him. It is the proper thing lor us to do to make efforts for di vision both at the national and a nuiitol. r* •• filll lima that a» oorumenoed and let U ««r work waa ooramenoed and let it be ear ueat, united and quiet work. If the above paragraph be correct, I then Mountain Home must be placed in the category of cities. You can always tell the character I of a man by the way in which he treats his stock. A pleasant, gcn-| crous hearted man never abuses his : stock, and always has their sur- 1 roundings pleasant and comfortable. ; A man who will cruelly treat his I dumb animals is n natural born villian, and he who neglects them is a worthless cuss on general princi ples.
