pcwatain ÿomc guUrti». O. M. PAYNK, * * * * Editor and Phoprintor. SATURDAY MoRNINO, DEC. 20, 1888. __ PBOKITAHliK ENTEllPllISE. Tix) long and too generally the impression has prevailed that loss was a shadow that like a vulture followed the pathway of mining on terprise. The untruth that "two dollars have been put into the mines for every one taken out," has almost crystalized into a croaking proverb, notwithstanding the fact that the metallic currency of the world came from the mines and is largely absorbed in other industries while the gold and silver mines of this country are producing eighty-six million dollars annually. If it ho true that this product of the past year cost $172^000,000, then mining must be admitted to he unprofitable business. The absurd ity of the charge, however, is suffic ient to prove its falsity. While it is true that a great amount of mon ey has been paid'that brought return, that the record of losses charged to the account of mining, is appalling in its magnitude, it is nevertheless true that the industry can show larger and reliahls returns for the vested iu it than any other nized business that can he named. It must be understood that paid for stock certificates offered by strangers, based stakes and an assay certificate, is not money put into a mine nor.into mining. It hears no more resem blance to mining than wheat deals on the Board of Trade do to farm* over an no mining more money m recog money upon location ing. BlindSpufchases of interest in mining claims, without examina .. .Meat tion of the character of the manage ment or the ore, cannot upon any reasonable basis he recognized as mining, as no one would claim that an unconsidered investment in any direction was business. The Chicago Mining Review as serts that a thorough investigation of the available facts shows clusively that a largo majority of the business men of this country have "almost universally found leg itimate mining investment profita ble, when made upon business prin ciples, as they would make any other investment. As a matter of fact a majority of tho heaviest cap italists and millionaires of the na tion owe their vast accumulations! of wealth to judicious mining in-i vestment, and it would be difficult to find in any of the larger cities, east or west, a prominent and lead ing business man who is not largely and profitably interested in mining. Theso facts are well established and so generally prevalent that now, in this stage of mining history, an ac knowledgment of repeated or ser ious loss and failure is such a re flection upon business ability-hind good judgment, that a man may well hesitate before ho condemns himself by such admission. corr Edison promises to put his latest invention of tho phonograph to curious and practical use. 11 in in intention is to furnish subscribers a talking daily newspaper. Tho lit tle instrument will ho charged with a condensation of the news of the day, and tho subscribers can listen to it while at breakfast. It will sing and play to them the latest operas, and reproduce the tones and sayings of public men, with ' all the thunders of applause. il Ocl«I Felluws licatl.
