The Weiser signal. PUBLISHED EVERY WEDNESDAY AND ^SATURDAY BY R. K. LOCKWOOD. The Grangeville Standard, which stands for national policies (if it has the ability to stand for anything) that are death on Idaho interests, has this to say : The Weiser Signal denies that pros perity exisis in its part of Idaho From the tone of its editorial voice, ragged men stalk the streets looking in vriii for work; hungry men besiege the free lunch joints in droves, jobs are at a preposterous premium. And a lot of other stuff equally as foolish. ▼eyed any such impression—but that is a sample of servile republican journals. Not one of them read}' to face a matter square and on the broad plane, but always ready to twist and contort and {make a detour and take the little two by four end The Signal has never con of a proposition, when a fair quota tion would leave them no room for what they class as argument. We can tell the Standard this much; Camas Prairie has lost 110,000.000 in the last ten years on its wheat crop alone, unless we under estimate its production, through policies put in force by the party the Standard speaks for. Yet, because they are not actually' impoverished by this loss Idaho county farmers must deem themselves prosperous beyond meas ure and shout hallelujahs to Hanna in the highest. Things must be «red by what we are not actually de prived of, and not by what we are naturally entitled to, we suppose. meas THIS BOUNDS STRANGE. In the federal court held in Des Moinee.lowa, Judge McPherson, pre siding, dissolved an injunction ob tained in the state courts restraining Maj. Turner, in charge of the con ■traction of the army post at Des Moines from building a private property. The judge ruled that any army officer carrying out the orders of a superior cannot be interfered with by state Amendments to the constitution, tide five, states clearly, " that no person can be compelled to be a wit ness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law, nor shall private property be taken for public without just compensation. sewer across courts. ar use A final amendment should be added stat ing clearly that all questions relating to the constitution, should be sub ject to the decision of the federal courts. By these insidious methods, liberty passes and imperial ism enters, which will be fully realized by individual sufferers. supreme THE PROSPERITY FALLACY. There seems to be somewhat of a difference of opinion as to what prosperity in Idaho and other tions of the west really is; and the clacking journals of the dominant party, in obedience to instructions, ring the same old changes and aume a condition of things that, un fortunately, does not exist. But, Polouious like, they see any shape in the business or political clouds por as sug gested by the party princes, who look upon a very different horizon, and through a very different med ium. If a town or locality for some Abnormal reason has a temporary •pasm of activity, and there is a de mand for a man to saw a cord of wood that cannot be supplied on im mediate call, it is assumed that a general scarcity of labor exists, and a great demand for people who toil for daily hire in order to get their daily bread. ■top, assuming the question satisfac torily settled, when it is not by Here these superficial critics any means. The construction of a public building because it cannot be dis pensed with, or the construction of water works by a municipality will f ornish work for a number of labor era and artisans, and, as the result, degree of local business improvement b evident, and by this system of cobbing Peter to pay Paul, a tempo rary condition of prosperity results and will assuredly be followed by a reaction, bringing the business of the oountry to relatively .the same con dition as before. The earning ca pacity has not been increased in any degree. So far as this particular lo cality is oonoerned there is no iqi a mediate cause for anxiety, for while there is more demand for work than there is for workmen, yet we are not overrun with an idle and dependent population, and our local resources are sufficient to afford living possi bilities to all—and this in spite of the unjust conditions that obtain. Half a dozen little sheets in this and adjoining counties are, in their nar row and short-sighted way, chatter ing at the Signal, but the Signal in speaaing of the hackneyed term, "Prosperity," took a broader view of the question, and looked beyond the mere bread and butter proposition of the present, to a fuller development of our resources, agricultural, min eral and others, and the establish ment of permanent industries as a result and a final retention by our own people of a just share of their honest earnings. This condition does not exist at present, and that it does not is directly due to the per nicious political methods of the past and present, and whereby the west is unjustly taxed by the manipulators of markets where our products are sold, and subjected to the paymeht of transportation charges that are ex horbitant and unjust And on all articles imported the same exhorbi tant railway charges are augmented to the last limit by a protective tar iff on every article possible to think of that enters into domestic use. And the evil is increasing in propor tion as the earnings of western pro ducers are unjustly absorbed by for eign monopolies. The chances for s change for the better is growing less, and unless it is made possible to es tablish a varied class of local indus tries that will afford steady employ ment no real prosperity can be ex pected or enjoyed. Because balf a loaf fills our present needs is no rea son why we should be compelled to give the other half to the ones who by these means have secured such an abundance, that they now demand it as their right. No country on earth has been so prosperous and profligate as the inter-mountain west during the days when a free development of its principal resources were encouraged and not paralyzed by national legis lation, infamous beyond expression, and the resources are still ours. Pos sibly long time must elapse before they will be made available and bring about the full degree of real prosperity—very different from the kind that as now mentioned in west ern papers, and which should be or namented with quotation signs.
