Officers attached to Gen eral Pershing's staff have selected from the hundreds of official reports a number that typify most strik ingly the gallantry and spirit of self-sacrifice that mad * America's army invincible, lien are a few of them: THOMAS O. NEIBOUR, Private, Company M, 167th Infantry. I'rlvaf« Nelbour, whose home Is at Bugur City, Idaho, was decorated for conspicuous gallantry In action near Laudres-et-Bt. Georges, France, Octo ber 18, UI18. On the afternoon of ()« - tober 10, when the Cote de Chat Ulen had Just been gained after bitter fight ing, and the summit of that strong bul wark In the krlenhllde Stellung was be ing organized, Private Nelbour was »ent on patrol with his automatic rifle squad to enfilade enemy machine gun neats. As Fflvate Nelbour gained thé ridge he set up his automatic rifle and was directly thereafter wounded In both legs by Are from a hostile machine gun on his flunk. The advance wave of the enemy troops counter-attacking had about gained the ridge and al though practically cut off and sur rounded, the remainder of his dctach incut being killed or wounded, »his gallant soldier kept his automatic rifle la operation to such effect that by his own efforts and by Ore from the skir mish Hue of his company at least 100 yards In his rear, the attack was checked. The enemy wave being halt ed and lying prone, four of the enemy attacked ITlvate Nelbour at close quarters. He continued to supervise the treatment of the wounded, despite the fact that he was suffering great pain, until the arrival of the surgeon, who sent him to the rear. Herlot, who lived near Provi dence, S. C., was decorated for con spicuous bravery, resulting In his death, at Vuux-Audigny, France, Oo tober 12, 1918. _ dlcrs. organized a combat group, and Corp. Herlot, with four other sol attacked an enemy machine gun nest which had been Inflicting heavy cas ualties on his company.
