A Crew or Deaf Mutes. Tho schooner Mary and Belle is probably the only vessel in the world that is manned by a crew that is deaf and dumb. The schooner is not a large vessel by any means, being about seventy feet long, but she is a neat-looking craft and her decks, spar and rigging look in much better con dition than those of many other ves sels whose crews can speak tho lan guage to the Queen's taste, dhys the Providence (R. I.) Journal. The cap tain of this craft, George Bennett, is a most intelligent-looking man, ap parently fifty years old. He is alive to all that is going on around him and seems to enjoy his silent and speechless life. The "crew," Charlie Malone, is also deaf and dumb. These two deaf and dumb men manage the stanch schooner Mary and Belle admirably. They are always on tho lookout and sleep writh one eyo open, a3 good sailors always should. When they are caught in heavy squalls tho Captain cannot shriek out his commands, but simply attracts his man's attention by a whistle and then tells him what ho wants by signs, whilo ho sticks to tha vheel. The First Methodist Church. The 128th anniversary of the Meth odist Church in America has recently been celebratod. The first Methodist church in this country was organized in a sail loft at 120 William street, New York. When the congregation had outgrown its quarters the edifice in John street was built. In 1818, when the church was erected, there were 400 members of that denomina tion in America ; now there are more than 5,000,000. Some of the old relics owned by the present congregation are tne original pulpit chair, the altar railing of the William street church, the subscription book, which contains the pums given by the charter mem bers and entered in their own hand writing, and other interesting articles, New Orleans Picayune. THG ONWARD HARCH of Consumption mm is O 011 W ISi! the Finest- Bread and Cake' It .3 conceded that the Royal Baking Powder Is the purest and strongest of all the baking powders. The purest baking powder makes the finest, sweet est, most delicious food. The strongest baking pow der makes the lightest food. .That baking powder which is both purest and strongest makes the most digestible and wholesome food. Why should not every housekeeper avail herself of the baking powder which wilf give her the best food with the least trouble? Avoid all baking: powders sold with a gill or prize, or at a lower price than tho Royal, as they invariably contain alum, lime or euU phuric acid, and render the food unwholesome. Certain protection from alum baking powders can be had by declining to accept any substitute for the Royal, which is absolutely pure. What Comes After Death. A good thing ia told in connection with the recent lectures on theosophy, in this city. The lecturer, in the midst of a learned disoourse, asked in stentorian tones: "What comes after death?" No one answered, and after waiting a moment he repeated with vehemence : "Again I say, what comes after death?" Just at that moment the door opened and in walked one of the leading un dertakers of the city and went demure ly to a seat. The coincidence was too much for the audience. Bangor Com mercial. Do you doubt that hundreds of such cases reported to us as cured by " Golden Med ical Discovery " were genuine cases of that dread and fatal disease ? You need not take oar word for it. They have, in nearly every h-vitance, been so pronounced by the best and most experienced home physicians, who have no interest whatever in mis representing them, and who were often strongly prejudiced and advised against a trial of "Golden Medical Discovery," but who have been forced to confess that it surpasses, in curative power over this fatal malady, all other medicines with which they are acquainted. Nasty cod liver oil aud its filthy "emulsions" and mixtures, had been tried in nearly all these cases and had either utterly failed to bene fhVor had only seemed to benefit a little for a short time. Extract of malt, whiskey, and various preparations of the hypophos phiteshad also been faithfully tried in vain. The photographs of a large number of those cured of consumption, bronchitis, lingering coughs, asthma, chronic nasal catarrh and kindred maladies, have been skillfully reproduced in a book of 160 pages which will be mailed to you, on re ceipt of address and six cents m stamps.
