LIT. IIS 1 IS NI FIE Spaniards Agree To Exchange. Ill OCCH Of GREAT JOY. Heroes of tlio Mrrrinnc lie coive Oration From Waiting Friends-Details of tii Interesting Kvent. An Associated dispatch from ofT Juriiguay states that Assistant Naval Cotihtructor Richmond P. llob boii, of tbe flagship New York, and th seven seamen who, with him, sailed the collier Merrimac into the channel of the harbor of Santiago de Cuba on June 3d last, and Bunk her there, were surrendered by the Spanish military authorities Thursday in eichauge for prisoners captured by the American forces. Ilouson and his men Mere escorted through the American lines by Cap tain Chadwick, of the New York, who was awaiting them. Every step of their Journey was marked by the wildest demonstration on the part of the American soldiers, who threw aside all semblance of or der, scrambled out of the entrench ments, knocked over tent guys and other camp paraphernalia in their eagerness to see the returning heroes, and sent up cheer after cheer for the men who had passed safely through the jaws of death to serve their coun- try. The same scenes of enthusiasm were repeated upon the arrival of the men at the hospital station, and at our base at Jauragua. Hobsou. who reached there in advance of his companions, was taken onboard the New lork lm mediately. The flagship's decks were lined with oflicers and men and as Hobson clambered up her side and stepped on board his vessel, the har bor rang with the shouts and cheers of his comrades, which were re-echoed by the crews of the dozen transports ly ing near by. Hobsou declined to Fay anything with regard to the Merrimac on the ground that he intended to submit a complete report to Admiral Sampson on the subject and that it would be outside the line of his duty to say any thing about the sinking of the Merri mac until after he had made such re port, or at least had had an-opportu-nity to consult the admiral. The Spanish authorities consented Wednesday morning to exchange Hob son and his men and a truce was etab ;lished for that purpose. The place selected for the exchange was under a tree between the American and Span , ish lines, two-thirds of a mile beyond ' the entrenchments occupied by Colo nel Wood's Rough Riders, near General Wheeler's headquarters, and iu the American line. The American prisoners left the Iteina Mercedes hospital, on the out skirts of Santiago, where they had been con lined, at 2:45 Thursday after noon, iu charge of Major Irles, 'a Span ish staff officer, who speaks English perfectly. The prisoners were conducted to the meeting place on foot, but were not blindfolded. Colonel John Jacob Astor and Lieutenant Miley, accom pauied by Interpreter Maestro, were iu charge of the Spanish prisoners. These consisted of Lieutenant Amello Yolez and Aurelius, a German, be ; longing to the Tweuty-niuth regular infantry, who were captured at El 1 Cauey on Friday last, and Lieutenant ; Adolo Aries, of the I irst provisional regiment of Barcelona, one of the most aristocratic military organizations of the Spanish army, and 14 non-com missioned oflicers and privates. Lieutenant Aries and a number of the men wero wounded in the fight at El Caney. The Spanish prisoners were taken through the American lines mounted and blindfolded. The meeting between Colonel Astor and Major Irles was extremely courte ous but very formal, and no attempt was made by eit'ier of them to disousa auythiug but the matter m hand. Major Irles was given his choice of '; three Spanish lieutenants in exchange for Hobson, and was also informed , that he could have all of the fourteen men iu exchange for the American sailors. The Spanish officers selected Lieutenant Aries, and the other two Spanish officers were conducted back to Juragua. A urtll Mother, A'" fA i f.i, if (;,) Hu Utin. V!tll luy t work tn hc horn. Mm. The Interest that Admiral Cervera took to effect the etchange of Junior Lieut. Hobson, United States. Navy, who was taken prisoner after sinking the Merrimac, recalls the time when, as a Lieutenant-Commander, Cervera was naval attache at the Spanish Le gation, In Washington, nearly twenty five years ago. The young officer owed hfs position to the fact that he was the nephew of the famous Admiral Topete, the most distinguished naval officer Spain has had In the last half century. Hla father was the richest wine merchant In Spain. For 2K) years the house of Cervera has existed as wine dealers In Jerez, handling ah the sherry which comes from that district alone.Cervera was a handsome fellow then. He was rich, a bachelor, and his dinners were among the finest given by diplomats, during General Grant's last term. Cer vera had a love affair that was much talked of at the time. He became des perately enamored of a charming young lady, the only chhu of one of the proudest and haughtiest men who ever sat In the Senate of the United States. She was not only a Senator's daughter, hut tjj cold and as proud as was her stately, aristocratic sire. Whether she smiled or frowned upon her pictur esque, handsome Spanish lover cannot now be told. In those days Cervera played the guitar with the grace of his race, and possessed an admirable light tenor voice. At an evening reception given by Mrs. Fish, wife of the Secretary of State, Cervera was asked to sing. He complied by fixing the' attention of every one near upon his inamorata, as, gazing at her in the most fervid man ner, he made her a deep bow and burst into the passionate measures of the most sensational of Spanish love songs. This was too much for the girl, and she quietly got out of the room and left tho house. Head Protection In Hot Weather. The Inhabitants of hot climates have long ago learned the value of a pro tective covering for the head that holds air-spaces, and when they must be out in the sunlight, they swathe the head In long strips of white cotton which they make Into the picturesque turban; and the experienced inhabitants of the hot climate shows hi3 wisdom by dis posing of the day's duties that demand active exercise in the cool of the early morning, and taking a siesta In the broiling noon hours. Pre mier Sacuta recently gave a reception to the British Minister. During the evening the Minister discovered that his watch had been stolen, and he came to the reluctant conclusion that one of the grandees present was the thief. Ife told Sagaata of his loss. Sagaata ask ed for silence and explained the situa tion. He aald that In order to save the culprit's honor the lights would be put out and the whole company would pass by the Premier's desk in the dark, and the culprit would redeem himself by placing the watch on the table. In darkness the company passed by the table. When the lights were turned on again not only was the watch not there, but a valuable sliver Inkstand belonging to Sagasta was mlsslng San Francisco Chronicle.
