St. Louis .Republic The announcement that Senator Tui-ley will not be a candidate for re-election will hardly complicate matters, but there will bo plenty of speculation as to who will succeed Governor McMillin, who is the log ical successsor of Senator Turley. Every loyal Tennessean is proud of the fact that her gifted son, Jim Richardson, has been mentioned in connection with the Democratic nomination for President. He is big enough for the position, but he doubtless recognizes the fact that Bryan is the man of the hour, and that ho can afford to wait until a more opportune time. Hon. J. M. Head, of Nashyille, attended tho Democratic confer ence of national committeemen at St. Louis last week, where he met and heard leading Democrats from all parts of the country. He says the Chicago platform is likely to bo reaffirmed with some additions to meet existing conditions, and he thinks the sentiment is strongly in favor of William J. Bryan as the next nominee for President. Ex-Governor Taylor says he will not be tempted to again enter the arena of politics. Well, "Our Bob" has gone out of politics sev eral times, but he has never failed to respond when the party called him. He may be wise in remain ing firm to his present resolve, how ever, for he is making money on the lecture platform, which is more than ho could say when he was in politics. But will the peoplo take him at his word? Hon. T. W. Sims' friends proudly refer to him as " Speaker Sims." A few days before Congress adjourn ed, Speaker Reed called him to the chair temporarily, and the whole House held its breath. Mr, Sims is the only Democrat who has oc cupied the Speaker's chair during the last session of the Fifty-fifth Congress, and Speaker Reed's ac tion is justly looked upon as a high honor "to the able Tennessean, and a particular tribute to his worth and ability.
