Seven dollars apiece were contributed
to Mayor Harr's Treasury, last Mon
day night, by two gentlemen for the
pleasure of knocking each other about
rive minutes.
A fellow told us the other day that
ho would writo us soon, and tell us to
send him the paper on a postal card.
We don't send papers on postal
cards.
The midnight train killed a hog
the other night. It is a shame that
the authorities of Johnson City per
mit the hogs to root about the streets
and sidewalks.
Charles Jackson who has been at
Emporia, Kansas, for several years,
is on a visit to his home in Taylors
ville. Charley gave our office a very
pleasant call, the other day.
"Do you say that doctors are busy
men?" enquired a man at tho hotel
the other day. "Yes," replied the
man to whom he was talking. "I nev
er pass a grave yard without thinking
what a big business they carry on."
James A. Tato, who was lately grad
uated from Lexington Commercial
College, called at our office a few days
ago. Mr. Tate will take charge of the
commercial department in Milligan

Mr. John Deakins, who started on n
trip from Sullivan to Crarfberry, last
week, became sick at Johnson City,
Saturday, and stopped at the Clay
House. Ha returned home Sunday,
and died that night.

of this town has lost his cow. She is a
dark red, black face with white spot
in forehead, right horn broken off and
has white flanks. Any person who

Miss Nelie Briscoe, of Montgomery's
Switch, Va., who has been visiting
n Knoxville for a few weeks, is visit
ing her schoolmates in Johnson City,

R. W. Kite, who has been on an ex
cursion trip to Washington city re
turned home at Milligan College, last
Tuesday. He says he heard a good
deal of enthusiastic talk for Cleveland,
Mr. and Mrs. w ill JJeakins were up
at the Baptist Association, on Satur
day last, and spent several pleasant
days with the family of Mrs. Deakins1
father; Esq., W. H. Taylor.
Mat Gilford and James Hickey were
the guides for a large party of ladies
to tho white rocks on Buffalo Moun
tain, Wednesday. . Hickey says the
scenery is grand, the ladies ' were
charming and tho water cool, nnd
they all had a good time.
P. G. Range has had the spring near
Mr. taw s house, walled up and put
in order. He desires all persons who
use water from that spring to pay him
something, as he has paid for the
whole work out of his own means.
E. S. Wolfe; the furniture man of
Johnson City, came into Thk Comet
office Thursday with a fine watcrmel
on, and there was smiling and gnash
ing of teeth.
There was an excursion up the Nar
row Gauge last Tuesday. It is de
lightful this hot weather to ride
through the mountain gorges in the
cool breexes of the mountain air.
Prof. W. A. Wright and family, who
have been visiting relatives in our vi
cinitv for several weeks, left for Pow
ells Valley Tuesday morning, to tak
chartre of a large school that will
commence Sept. 1st.

ons are plenty and cheap, lots of mel
ons and plenty of butter and eggs are
here. By the way, we have heard con
gratulations showered on our people
for their kindness to their many visi
tors. They throw wide open their doors
and make all welcome. The ladies in
particular deservo all praise, without
them Johnson City would be a brier
patch. They deserve to be, and w
hope all will yet be parlor ornaments
in paradise.

lor, of the firm of J. C. Taylor & Co,
was smothered to death, last week, by
being covered up with Blackberries,
