If the largost and best grapes are do sired it is necessary to dress tho vines as woll as to bag the bunches. Vine dressing consists' in cutting back tho fruiting canes in tho third or fourth joint beyond tho outermost bnuch of grapes upon tho cane, and then tying the pruned cauo to the trellis eo as to give to each tho largest amount of light possible. A few weeks after a cane is pruned latoral canes will havo grown out at the baso of each leaf, beside the bud which is to produco next year's crop. W lieu tuose laterals Lave reach ed tho third or fourth leaf their tips should bo pinched oil. It may be nee ossary to pinch tho laterals two or three times during tho summer. If tho later als are pinched too soon, the buds ou the main cane will push, and the crop of the next year will bo greatly lessen od. Vine dressing turns the energies of the plant from tho making of wood to the more perfect development of the fruit. When summer pruning is not to be practised the grape branches grow very long and wood is produced at the expense of perfect fruit. In the wine vineyards of the Rhine and California, dressing the vines is considered of fhe greatest importance, as the sugar con teut of the dressed grapes is much greater than when summer pruning is not practiced. In the high, three-wire trellis and Kniffen systems of training where tho main canes are fastened to wires three to six feet above ground, the fruiting caues are allowed to grow unprnned.but their weight soon causes them to turn downward, aud thus the part of tho cane near the buse, where the fruit sets, receives a greater share of nourishment than when the canes grow upward, the effect of the fruit be ing similar to that are grown on the spur Bystem of training. At tho ex periment station this year an experi ment in dressing vines under all sys tems of training is being conducted. In all the systems it is important to take out all barren or blind canes ex cept such as are needed for next sea son's fruiting, to replace weakened or lengthened spurs. Charles A. Kf.ffkr. Tenn.
