Lee's War Horse Came from Famous Wilson County Stock. Capt. F. S. Ilarris of this city Las re ceived a lotter from Thomas L. Brown, of Charloston, W. Va., giving an inter esting story of old "Travrler," General Robert E. Lee's saddle horse, which he rodo through the war from 1801 to 1864. A representation this horse, though not at all a good one, appears on the monument erected in honor of the dis tinguished general at Richmond, Va. The interest Capt. Harris evinces in the old horse is due to the fact that his sire win a Wilson County, Tenn., horse. Traveler was sired by Gray Eagle. known as Motley's Arab, and owned by Samuel L. Calhoun of Wilson county. Tho Wilson oounty Arabs wore of the very best soddle horses to bo found in the state and to own one was tho pride of every Wilson county gentleman of the ante-bellum days. In his letter to Capt.- Harris, Jlr. Brown inclosed the following account of the old horse Vibieh was publisli'd in the Richmond, Va., Dispatch is'l W and which will prove of interest to Jl who remember the famous Wilson county saddle horses: "He was raised, by Mr. Johnson, near tho Blue Sulphur Springs, in Greenbrier countp, Va. near West Virginia; was of tho Gray Eagle stock, and as a colt took the first premium under the name of Jeff Davis at the Lewisburg fairs for each of the years 1859 and 1801. He was 4 years old in the spring of 1801. "When the Wiso Legion was n-' camped on Sewell mountains opposing the adv.iuce of the Federal army un der Gen. Rosocrans in the fall of 1801, I was major to the Third Regiment of Infantry in that legion, and my brother Capt. Joseph M. Browrv'was quarter master to the same regiment. I au thorized my brother to purchase a good serviceable horse of. the best Greenbrier stock for our use during the war. After much inquiry , and search he came across the horse men tioned, and I purchased him for $175, gold value, in the fall of 1861 of Capt. James W. Johnson, son of Mr. John son first above mentioned. "When the Wise Legion was encamped about Meadow Bluff and Big Sewell moun tains I rode this horse, which was then greatly admired in camp for his rapid, spring walk, his high spirit, bold car riage, and muscular strength. He needed neither whin nor spur and would walk his five or six miles an hour over the rough mountain roads of West Virginia, with his rider sitting firmly in the saddle and holding him in check by a tight rein, such vim and eagerness did he manifest to go right Right Whs Her Terror. "I would cough nearly all night long," writes Mrs. Chas. Applegate, of Alexander, Ind., "and could hardly get any sleep. I had consumption so bad that if 1 walked a block I would cough frightfully and spit blood, but, wnen nil other medicines failed, three $1 bottles of Dr. King's New Discovery wholly cured me and I gained 68 pounds." Lee took command of the Wise Legion and Floyd brigade that were encamped at and near Big Sewell Mountains in the fall of 1801 he first saw this horse and took a grent fancy to it. He called it his colt, and said he would need it before the war was over. Whenever the general saw my brother on this horse he had some thing plearant to say to him about 'my colt,' as he designated this horse. "As the water approached the climate in the West Virginia mountains caused Rosocrans' arMy to ebandou its posi tion on Big Sewell and retreat west ward. Gen. Lee was thereupon or dered to South. Carolina. The Third regiment of the Wise Legion was sub sequently detached from the army in West Virginia, and ordered to the South' Carolina coast, where it was known as the Sixteenth Virginia Regi ment, undor Col. Starke. "Upon seeing my brother on this horse near Focotaligo, in South Caro lina, Gen. Lee at onoe recognized the horse, and again inquired of him pleas -anily about bis oolt, My brother then offered him the horse as a gift, which the general promptly declined, and at the same time remarked: If you will willingly sell me the horse, I will gladly use it a week or so to learn its qualities.' Thereupon my brother had the horse sent to Gen. Lee's stable. In about a month the horse was returned to my brother, with a note from Gen. Lee, stating that the horse suited him, but that ho could not longer use so valuable a horse in such time unless it wore his own; that if my brother would not sell, please to keep the horse, with many thanks. This was in February, 1802. At that time I was in Virginia on the Brck list from a long sovere at tack of camp fever contracted in the campaign on Big Sewell mountains. My brother wrote me of GenJLiee's de sire to have the horse, and asked me what henhould do-. I replied at once: 'If he will not accept it, then sell it to him at what it cost me.' He then sold the horse to Gen. Lee for $300 in cur rency, the sum of $25 having been added by Gen. Lee to the price I gave for the horse in' September, 1801, to make up for the depreciation in our currency from September, 1861, to February, 1802. In 1808 Gen. Lee wrote to my brother, stating that this horse had survived the war, waB known as 'Traveller," spelling the word with a double '1' in good english style, and asking for its pedigree, which was ob tained as above mentioned and sent by my brother to Gen. Leen." Nashville Banner. Taylor reached tho city Friday morning and will leave at 1:20 today to resume his work upon the lecture platform. ine governor tells a very amusing story on himself the last time he was in Philadelyhia which was just after the November election. Of course these are not Mr. Taylor's words, but the substance of his story: "I lectured in a' northern town just after tho November blast went off," said Mr. Taylor. "I was absolutely unknown. The people of that towu were positively so ignorant that they had never .even heard of me. My fame had bcon sidetracked on the way to that town. It is a humiliating confes sion to make, but it is a true one. I was aware of this fact before I went there, however, and was accordingly prepared for the ordeal, I had been well billed in advance of my arrival and half way hoped that there would be a committee at the depot to meet me. You may imagine my surprise when upon my arrival there I found a crowd large and enthusiastic enough to havo surprised Mr. Bryan in Texas or Arkansas. I was simply dazed. Hats waved and hurrahs sounded and I was like unto a conquering hero returning home from battle in olden times. It was great. I asked myself what it all could mean, but myself couldn't an swer the question. I marveled much and was perplexed, but I could only be patient and depend on time to solve the mystery. I was ushered into a car nage by tne mayor and one or two other dignitaries and driven to my ho tel amid moro republican pomp and display than you ever saw. The peo ple of the town were almost unanimous ly republican and they gave me such a welcome as McKiuley might well have been proud of. After we had reached the hotel, I expressed to one of my es corts my deep sense of gratitude at the magnificent ovation I had received, ad ding that the bleody chasm had in deed been bridged and Mason's and Dixon's line forever obliterated. 'Yes, governor,' he replied, 'we are for you in this town to a man. We feel that you have been outrageously treated and we will do anything in onr power for you. You need not be afraid of not having a fine house tonight.' Well, that put me to thinking. I was not aware of any particularly outrageous treatment that I had received. I scratched my head and smelt a mouse. I liked the prospects of the big audi ence that I was to have and so I put on my martyr expression of countenance Strikes a Bich Find.
