THE GAMEOF LIFE.
Supt. John Deacon, of the
Brick Yard, Tells Some
thing , About the
Struggle.
A good unit's rest. That's the se
cret of longevity, work well during the
day, and rest well at night, and suc
cess is yours in life.. But without the
good night's Bleep life is full of worry
nud discomfort wand pain. Busy men
know this aud so do busy women.
There's but one thing to do. If you
can't rest well at night learn the rea
son. Some part of the human machine
is out of order and out of order. Here's
the experience of a well-known citizen
who got at the root of his troubles.
John Deacon, superintendent of the
Adams Bros. & l'ayno Brick yards,
and who lives on Waluut street, says:
"I was a sufferer from backache and
pains through my luius and over the
kidneys for a period of two years. The
pain was so bad at times that I could
not stoop and mornings I had to roll
out of bed . I did not rest comfortably
at night aud arose more tired than
when I went to bed. The kidney se
cretions were irregular and at times
very scant. I tried several remedies
but they gave me little relief. Finally
I procured Doan's Kidney Tills at the
Patton Drug Co.'s store and found
that they were just what I required.
They drove away the backache and
put my kidneys in their normal condi
tion . To speak of the merits of Doan
Kidney Fills in such terms of praise as
they deserve might seem extravagant
to others who have not used them."

Ills Last Hope. Realized.
(From the Sentinel, Gebo, Mont,)
In the first opening of Oklahoma to
settlers in 1889, the editor of this paper
was among the many seekers after for
tune who made the big race one fine
day in April. During his traveling
about aud afterwards his camping up
on his claim, he encountered much bad
water, which, together with the severe
heat, gave him a very severe diarrhoea
which it seemed almost impossible to
check, and along in June the case be
came so bad he expected to die. One
day one of his neighbors brought him
one small bottle of Chamberlain's Col-
, u noi era and uiarrnoea Kemedy as
last hope. A big dose was giveu him
while he was rolling about in great ag
ony, and in a few minutes the dose was
repeated. The good effect of the med
icine was boou noticed and- within an
hour the patient was taking his first
sound sleep for a fortnight. That one
little bottle worked a complete cure,
and he cannot help but feel grateful.

Old Doo Burns had been a valued

had lost his prestige through an cx

He was a first class doctor when
he was sober; but he was so seldom

the only other doctor in town had
gone to the country to see a patient,
a hurry call was sent for Doc Burns,
He arrived, drunk, as usual, but as
suming a professional air he begau an

touched the pulse he exclaimed:

LETTER FROM LEE.
Epistle Written Fifty Years Ago By Great
Southerner to His Son.
Ripley, Tenn., May St.-The follow
ing is. the text of a letter written by
Rebort E. Lee to his son iu 18 )2, the
origiual of which is iii possession of
Dr. J. T. Fry of Galveston, Texas. At
the recent meeting of the Confederate
reunion at New Orleans a member of
the local camp here socured a copy of
it, and as there is much wisdom aud
sound logic embodied therein, aud in
view of tho fact that Lee was so much
admired throughout the country it is of
sufficient interest to claim space. The
following is the letter:
Arlington House,
April 5, 1853.
My Dear Son I am just iu the act
of leaving home for Now Mexico. My
fine old regiment has been ordered to
that distant region, aud I must hasten
on to see that they are properly cared
for. I have but little to add iu reply
to your letters of March 20, 27 and 28.
Your letters breathe a true spirit of
frankness; they have given myself and
ynur mother great pleasure lou
must study to be frank with the world;
frankness is the child of honesty and
courage. Say just what you wish to do
on every occasion, and take it for
granted that you mean to do right. If
a friend asks a favor you should grant
it if it is reasonable; if not, tell him
why you cannot; you will wrong him
and yourself by equivocation of any
kind. Never do a wrong thing to make
a friend or keep one; the -man who re
quires you to do so is dearly purchased
at tench a sacrifice. Deal kindly but
firmly with all your classmates; you
will find it the policy which wears beBt,
Above all, do not appear to others
what you are not. If you have any
fault to find with any one, tell him,
not others, of what you complain; there
is no more dangerous experiment than
that of undertaking to be one thing be
fore a man's ace and another behind
his back.
We should live, act and say nothing
to the injury of any one. It is not only
nest as a matter of principle, but it is
the path to peace and honor.
In regard to duty, let me, in con
elusion of this hasty letter, inform you
that nearly one hundred years ago
there was a day of remarkable gloom
and darkness still known as the dark
day a daw when the light of the sun
was slowly extinguished as if by an
eclipse. The legislature of Connect!
cut was in session, and as its members
saw the unexpected and nnaccountable
darkness coming on they shared in the
general awe and terror. It was sup
posed by many that the last day, the
day of judgment, had come. Someone
in the consternation of the hour, moved
an adjournment. Then there arose an
old Puritan legislator, Davenport of
Stamford, and said if the last day had
come, he desired to be found at his
place doing his duty, and therefore
moved, that candidates be brought in
so the house could proceod with its
duty. There was quietness in that
man's mind, the quietness of heavenly
wisdom and inflexible willingdess to
obey present duty. Duty, then, is the
sublimest word in our language. Do
your duty in all things, like the old
Puritan. You cannot do more; you
should never wish to do less. Never
let me and your mother wear one gray
hair for any lack of duty on your part
Your offectionate father,

"Few and Far Between."
Drunks in Morristown are "few and
far between" now, the town having
gone "dry" ami the liquor business
thereby boing compollod to move out
about a month ago. Tho busiuess of
the city recorder is now practically
suspended as regards drunkenness,
fighting and disorderly conduct, and
everything seems "lovely and the
goose hangs high." Some few drunks
have been reported as a result from ex

The Hygiene of Old Age.
We look upon the aged with good
reason as having a slender hold upon
life, one that may be loosened bv a
slight shock of injury or disease which,
Al. 'i ll. . , . ',
in uie young or miuuie-ageu, would
serve only as a stimulus to the repara
tive vital powers. This is a conserva
tive belief, but it warns us to shield
our loved ones who have fought the
fight from all influences which might -
shorten their stay with us. But we
must not go too far in onr solicitude.
for injury may be inflicted and life
shortened by coddling tho old, almost
as surely as by coddling the young.
The vital processes in the aged are slow
but they are still existen, and they may
be kept active by gentle opposition and
stimulation, just as they may be in
creased in childhood and youth by
rough methods. Dr. Caldwell's Syrup
of Pepsin and Herb Laxative Compound
is a boon to the aged and infirm, and
probably no medicine has accomplished
so much or received as high or as many
indorsements from men and women
whose extreme age gives them a seem
ingly slender hold upon life. Dr. Cald
well's Syrup Pepsin makes perfect di
gestion and acts gently upon the bowels '
in an easy aud pleasant manner. Tones
