As we see no one corresponding for
Tub Comet from this part of the moral
vineyard, perhaps a few items may not
be amiss to your many readers.
Farmers are about up with their har
vesting auu "laying by tbeir corn
crop, auil are now ready for turning
the soil for wheat, only waiting for the
ground to get in proper condition.
Mrs. John CrosBwbite and little son,
of Kansas City, Mo., are expected to
arrive hero in a few days on a month's
visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.
E. Wilson. Mr, Crosswhite will arrive
some two week's later.
Politics are beginning to bo the talk
ot the day, and from present indica
tions tbe political lines are going to be
more tightly drawn than has been cus
tomary in county elections for several
years. 1 he republicans baring a de
cided majority in tbe county it is ad
mitted by the present encumbents' best
friends that they will have to get a
mighty bustle on if they succeed in be
ing re-elected. The personal popu
larity of both the trustee and sheriff
will be a very poteut element in their
behalf, and with unremittent and un
tiring labor until the close of the polls,
we may pass them under tbe wire. Tbe
result either way is bound to be close.
The health of this community was
never better, and if our prominent and
popular physician did not have several
other business enterprises cn band that
amply supplies tbe demands of the in
ner man, he would perhaps ber com
pelled to go to bed hungry on many oc
casions. We have recently had free delivery
of tbe mail established here with this
a starting point. Also a postoffice
money order office, both of which is a
great blessing to the route it covers.
Blackberries our only sure crop has
about played out. It is needless to
say more of them were canned and
made into jam and jelly than common,
for tbe reason apples, peaches and all
other fruits are almost a complete fail
ure in this section.
Johnson City is certainly enjoying a
period of reformation, as we have not
beard of a killing or attempted killing

The wheat crops here are better than
lor many years. It tuere were not so
many horrible democrats scattered
among us the good Lod would prob
ably have smiled upon us two fold bet
ter.
Being a republican, we cannot write
little items that a democratic taper
would likely publish, so will close,
promising that if this escapes tbe waste
basket, that after the election we will

cratic headquarters, every one may ex
pect to hear the cannon roar. The am
munition thus far in the bands of the

tariff chain shot and cayenne pepper,
and the first discharge by franked
mail will tare large gaps in tbe flying
columns of the enemy the republican
party, from Newyorkivitch to Califor

growing vegetation was beginning to
show the effects of the dry, hot weather
of a week ago.
Elmer Dulaney seems to have an

tain. That's right, Elmer, always try

As the August election is very uar
at hand let all the democrats set a
bump on themselves and work for tbe
party nominee's. Keep awake, look
ahead and keep ahead, until tbe polls
close on tbe first Thursday in August
and the victory w ill be ours.
All democrats and a majority of the
good republicans here are well pleased
with the selection of Hon. E. K. Bach
man by the Oroeneville convention, as
tbe democratic candidate for attorney
general. Mr. Bachman is well quali
fied for the attorney-generalship, as has

On Sunday morning, July 17tb,
death visited our district and claimed
for its victim the 11-year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. James -Burleson. His
death was due to flux. He was laid to
rest on the following-day in the family
cemetery. The bereaved family have j
the sympathy of all.

plenty of snakes, and "chiggers," to
make a fellow scratch.
Our jolly old frioud, John S. Nead,
says he does not intend to. go to the
mountains another timo this year and
take as many "wimmen" as he did laxt
week without having another man to
help him look after them. We would
be just like you, Undo John, for wo
men are too much trouble anyway, and
you know they never say "thank you"
only with a striped stick of candy.

We are all doing very well, having
three square meals a day and the polit
ical horizon looks very serene to tbe
old vets as they take their afternoon
recreation in tbe shady park. The
average veteran finds more enjoyment
making the rounds of tbe park, black
berry field and backwoods, than in
anything else. Again he is cultivating
Chesterfield and Buckingham manners
thereby raising tbe standard of our
reservation courtesy when they see a
lady or strangers on tbe ground.
On July 1st, the beginning of the
fiscal year, some changes were made,
and more will follow higher up in the
near future for elements are cryBtaliz
ing which are destined to jolt ns a lit
tle with a 20th century interpretation
ot tbe rules and regulations governing
this branch.
Last week we had quite an interest
ing performance in tbe bean patch be
