Buck Lumber Coi has moved its offices to room No. 103 in Hotel Carnegie,and Mr. Ilaskett Wood is in control, his father having bought the interest of Mr. J. M. Buck in the corporation. This is one of the largest lumber companies in this section, own ing a large boundary of timber on the South & Western and operating a pri vate railroad through its property. I'nuka Handle Factory. Ayers, of Big Stone Gap, was in the city this week and told The Comet that he found tho senti ment of Johnson City strongly in favor of municipal ownership of tho.wator plant uud stated that he would be pleased to meet the citizens and the board of mayor and aldermen and agree if possible upon a fair valuation of the combined plant and lot tho transfer be made now if it can bo legally done, if not, let a contract be entered into for the purchase as soon as bonds can be issued. Mr. Ayres is in a position to net for the holders of the Watauga Water Company, and he says if he says that if he was a citizen of this city be would favor municipal owership also and is not disposed to interfere with the plane. He believes the plant can bo bought on a basis that will yield the city au income now and will steadily increase. General Ayers will be in the city next Thursday, Sept. 21st, to meet a committee of citizens and representa tives of the board and Commercial Club. Card of Thanks. Board of Mayor and Alderman of the town of Johnson City, Tennessee: We, the undersigned citizens and tax payors cf the town of Johnson City, Tenn., make to your honorable body the following proposition for supplying the town of Johnson City with water after the date of the expiration of the twenty year franchise granted hereto fore to tho Watauga Water Co., which time we understand will expire about five years from this date. If your honorable body will grant to us, or to a corporation to be organized by us, the exclusive franchise for a pe riod of twenty years for supplying Johnson City and the inhabitants thereof with water, commencing ts aforesaid at the date of the expiration of the twenty year exclusive franchise granted to the Watauga Water Co., in manner and form as shown in franchise now pending, we will, in consideration therefor, grant unto the town of John son City without any charges therefor water for the following purposes: To any and all publio buildings own ed by the town of Johnson City, for municipal purposes and all of the of fices of the city officials connected therewith. FEED ARTZ, Johnson City, Tenn. Southern Kailvvny Awards Biff Contracts- The Southern Railway has awarded to the firm of Sands & Oliver, railroad contractors of Roanoke. Va.. a millon dollar contract, which with others let during the past six months, makes a total of $2,000,000 which that road pro poses to Bpend, and is already spend ing on important and far-reaching im provements on the Southern lines of road. The contract awarded to the Roanoke firm calls for the double tracking of the Southern from Morristown to Knox ville, Tenn., as well as the building of a line of rood from Chattanooga, Tenn. , to Stevenson, Ala. The new line which tho Southern now proposes building will cross the Tennnessee river at Chattanooga and connects with the Memphis line at Stevenson, running down the north west bank of the Tennessee instead of the southeast, which is occupied by the N. C. & St. L. tracks. This will give the boutuern road a line of their own through the narowest and most troublesome of tho mountain nuBses around Chattanooga. It is said that a contract will soon be let for double tracking the Southern from Knoxville to Chattanooga, C. & 0. and S. & W. Hush for ''Breaks." Norton, Va., Sept. 8. There is a great rush on between the Chesapeake Ohio Railway and the South & Western as to which shall ocounv the "Brenks of the Sandy." The latter road has more than two hundred hands laboring on its right of way, and have been there more than a month. Three squads are on the Ken tucky side of "the Breaks" going to wards Pikeville. There was an agree ment by which the South & Western was to'have till next January to have said road completed through "the Breaks" and down to Elkhorn Cit; , eighteen miles above Pikeville. The South & Western has bought all the lands through "the Breaks" both on the Virginia and Kentucky sides. The officials of the Chesapeake and Ohio made a rush through Pikeville a day or two ago on a special to Morrow bone aud then by rigs and horseback to "the Breaks." This special con tail. ed President Stevens and other officials and contractors. There will be a trolley road up Greasy Creek to removo the manufac tured products that will soon be ready in great quantities. Cairo and Tennessee River Railroad. Under the head of railroad construc tion the St. Louis Republic of the 11th says: The Cairo and Tennessee River road will be 425 miles long, extending from Wickfifle, Ky., to Bristol, Tenn., 300 miles of the line being located in Kentuck and 125 miles in Tennessee. The route is via Mayfield, Hopkins yiile, Franklin, Tompkinsville, Albany, Pine Knot, Jellico and Cumberland Gap, Ky., and Rogersville, Tenn, The preliminary survey has been com pleted from Wickliffe to Cumberland Gap, Ky., 300 miles, and the line in being located from Mayfield to Hop kinsville, Ky., seventy miles. Con tracts for the section from Wickliffe to Mayfield will be let about September 15, the location of this part of the line having already been completed, and it is expected to begin grading about October 1. An extension is proposed from Bristol, Tenn., to Norfolk, Va., a distance of 400 miles. We have noted in one or two papers criticisms of Congressman Patterson, candidate for Governor, that are neith er fair nor justifiable. A newspaper that through a community of interests or otherwise supports one Democrat for office can hardly justify its assaults on the ground that it is a Democratic newspaper. Nrshville American. She was only ill a few davs with inflamation of the stomach but being past 74 years of age it im possible for the best medical attention to relieve her. For more than half a century the deceased has resided in f ohnson City. She was the relict of T. A. Faw who died in 1888 arid who was one of the city's most prosperous business men in the city until a short time before his death. She was Miss Carrie Wagner, daughter of one of the most prominent families of Johnson oounty, and has a large number of rel atives in that section. She was a noble, christian woman and lias reared a large family that were a blessing to her in her old age. All were present when the shadows darkened and did all that lovidg hands could to adminis ter to her wants. The funeral services were held at the residence Sunday afternoon by Ror. M. F. Or in tho event the said town of Johnson City shall prefer we will in liou of the above give free water to all the buildings and purposes above enumerated, except fire hydrants, and in addition thoreto the sum of $25,030 to be paid in annual installments of twenty payments beginning with the date the franchise will go into effect, and payable annually thereafter during the said period of twenty years until the same is paid in full, but we are to have the right to charge for the use of water for fire hydrants at a rate not in excess of the rates, now fixed in the franchise with the Watauga Water Co., and under which it is now furnishing water to the town of Johnson City, the rate therein prescribed being adopted as the maximum rate with the privilege open to the said city to contract with us for a less rate, in the event it shall be found within our power to grant a better rate. The above shall be the basis of the grant of a franchise to us to be at once drawn aud adopted. In witness whereof, we have hereun to set our hands this the Gth day of September, 1905. Jas, A.
