Of these ninety have been recovered but only sixty Identified. While fires can be seen away to the east and southeast, their progress not dangerous to human lite. Fire rangers here complain that the heat of the surface and gases arising therefrom prevent their proceeding far into the masses of charred tree limbs and burned underbrush. The air in the devastated district is still smoky and no further attempt m ill be made to locate bodies until further re inforcements and relief are secured. Five nurses, a doctor, fifty cots, a large amount of bread and thousands of pounds of meat have reached here from Winnipeg. Last night the streets of Rainy River were patrolled by armed guards under Fire Warden Hurst. National guards men from Bemidjl, Minn., guarded Beaudette. The funerals of nineteen fire victims were held yesterday. Resolutions were Adopted by Con vention With a Shout Had Endorsed a Republican to Nashville, Tenn., Oct. 7. James Vertrees was recommended for nation al committeeman in a resolution pass cd by the convention this afternoon just after the platform had been adopt ed. The resolution was submitted the platform committee and by it sent to the convention through Chairman W. H. Washington. It was adopted unanimously with a snout. The reso lution is as follows: Whereas, R. E. L. Mountcastle, of Knoxville, Tenn., the member of the national democratic committee recent ly presided over a political convention which indorsed a republican candidate for gover of Tennessee and approved of that convention's action, and openly supports that candidate; and "Whereas, The officials representing the organization of a political party ought, under all circumstances, to be faithful, trustworthy and loyal; and, "Whereas, It is the right of every citizen in good faith to change his poll cies and party nfllliations, but not the right of any party omcial to do so and openly aid and abet the political op ponents he was elected to oppose with out resigning ins position in the or ganization; and, "Whereas, Mr. Monntcastle has per sisted in remaining committeeman, nolhw ithstanding Iris unfaithful ac tion, thereby giving, as far as possible, seeming official endorsemen to that ac tion it is for this reason now: "Resolved, That it is the sense of this convention that R. E. L. Mount- castle has been unfaithfnl to his trust, and that the welfare of the democracy of Tennessee demands his removal,and accordingly we demand that a demo crat be selected in his place and stead, before another presidential election, and that this resolution be forwarded by the chairman of this convention to the chairman of the national demo cratic executive committee, and we suggest the name of Hon. Matthews, who will preside at the East Tennessee conference of the Unit ed Brethren church which 0011 venes in Johnson City Wednesday morning, ar rived in the city Tuesday and was greeted by Rev. E. II. Given, D. D., pastor of tie First United Brethren church, who will accompany him to , Johnson City Wednesday morning. The sessions of the conference will continue until Sunday, when the as signments of the various preachers in the conference ;will be announced. Bishop Matthews will take the place of Bishop T. C. Carter, of Chattanooga who presided over the conference held last year in Knoxville and who is at present holding conference in th north. This will be the first conference held in East Tennessee that Bishop Mat thews has presided over. He has just returned from Kentucky, where he held a conference Bishop Matthews, said Tuesday morning that twenty new churches had been built in that state during the past six years, while there were three others ready to be dedicated. ' Bishop Matthews expressed himself as being delighted with the rapid growth of the United Brethren church in East Tennessee and said that he was sure that the coming conference would be of great material and spirit ual results to the members. Bishop Matthews is a native of Day ten. His father was a Tennsylvanian, and his mother came from Maryland. He is full of spirit tnd energy and ex pects to infuse considerable life into the conference sessions at Johnson City. The annual conference of the United Brethern church will convene in the United Brethren church, Watauga and Roan streets, this afternoon at 2 o'clock.
